We don't win games like that

It was a 6-12 B1G team that beat a 14-4 PAC 12 team.

In all honesty this team looked great. Excited for the game on thursday

We did look great. Why can Welch not make a free throw to save his life at the end of the game?

That's a good question. I really like Welch. He's a solid player for us, and will continue to be next season. He's clearly playing hurt right now.

It's strange how Julian has had a lot of really clutch buckets for us throughout the season -- especially before Andre evolved -- but at the FT line at the end of a game has been a different story. Was really hoping he'd knock both of 'em (free throws) down last night in OT, if for no other reason to get over the hump mentally about making FT's in crunch time. It's not like he's a bad FT shooter.

One possible explanation for his FT woes late in games is that his shot is kinda flat and almost pushed. Under the stress and tension of a late game situation his shot is more prone to being long as you get amped up. The same analogy is often used in Golf...Players get amped up late in a round and often over-hit their wedges. Dre has a softer touch on his shot with more arc...more prone to getting a softer bounce.

Also on the note of FT's, I wish somebody reminded Coleman that he's been long off the back rim on 99% of his misses and it usually occurs on his first attempt.

If I was coaching the Gophers, I would encourage the players to shoot with more arc and err on the side of being short because the balls that hit the front rim have a much better chance of going in than those which hit the back rim first.

Am I reading that correctly?

It sure sounds like Ron Jirsa will be in Ashland, Wis., next season, maybe Moses can fill that spot on Tubby's staff?

"We don't win games like that".... Leonardo Dicapreio as Howard Hughes....." wave of the future, wave of the future, wave of the future".....

Moses might as well. He is also in agreement with the run Mav and Chip of the team crowd so he can have input in that also.

I didn't say run them off, I said I think Tubby would handle things in a classier manner, i.e. finding a school to take them and then selling them on it. If they wanna stay in Minnesota and be cheerleaders, that is their right and I won't begrudge them for that. Being competitors, they will probably both transfer for a chance to prove themselves. They clearly won't get many minutes next year unless we have injuries.

in any sport, ever. So who was that team?

The key mentally is to focus on the front of the rim and merely getting the ball over the front of the rim. I heard Trent Tucker say that once, and I've used it, and it really works. In one respect, if you give yourself something specific to focus on, it eliminates the mental noise.

I personally like to look at the back of the rim and dropping it right in front of it.

The key though is just looking at the rim in some way (yet plenty of NBA shooters watch the ball for some reason) I've also had coaches harp to "Never Leave it Short" because if it is long it has a better chance of spinning back and in or for a high rebound for the team to get or put back.

In putting parlance, the saying is, "Never there, never in", or "Take the skirt off, Sally".

Not sure if that applies to free throws.

This is me too. I have little arc on my shot, a lot of the angle with the ball coming off the rim is the amount of spin on your shot. If you have a lot of spin and hit the front of the rim, the ball stops and doesn't go very far.

I still find it bizarre that I can make 70% of my free-throws the few times per year I get bored at lifetime and guys who more or less do this for a living can't.

Now if I could grow taller and learn to jump...

No matter if it is done in a "classier manner" implying that Tubby should find a school to take them and then selling them on the idea sounds pretty much like running them off to me.

he could just do like Calipari did and tell them, "sorry, we don't have a spot for you anymore." I don't think Tubby would do that. I think if either wants to stay they will be allowed to stay...That's a huge difference.

There's a big difference between being a 5'9", out of shape "basketball jones" who can hit 90% from the line at the Ymca and can't touch the rim vs. an athlete who can endure running the floor for 30 minutes with lightning speed and pluck a quarter off the top of the backboard. I used to play pickup games with Wes Mathews in the 70's in Madison, I thought I could hold my own, Ha, he toyed and destroyed me. I played a ranked 12 yo tennis player, thinking it would be close. Wrong, 6-0, I scored one point and hardly touched the ball, he was bored.

I'm only talking about free-throw shooting. If I can hit 70%, everyone should be able to hit 70%, unless of course their free-throw technique resembles a catapult. Yes chip, I am referring to you.

Agreed. Other teams focus on this and do better. One coach has his Team run sprints for every free throw missed in a game.

Some of these guys do look like Sport Goofy from the Disney shorts. If nearly all people can learn to proficiently drive a motor vehicle, those same people can be taught to make at least two-thirds of their free throws.

I echo From the Barn. I haven't tried a free throw in 14 months but I know I could step up there and make 7 of 10 cold. Not bragging; more like: if I can do that, what can really coordinated people do?

Play all out for 20 minutes; have a few thousand people in the place watching you; televise it nationwide; have an outcome riding on your shooting. Make 7 out of 10 then and I'm impressed. Until then, it's sort of silly talk.

I can do better...I can shoot 7 and make all 10. :)

It's embarrassing, isn't it? I am a much better athlete in general than my wife (fat, overweight, and out of shape as I am), but she played #1 singles in HS. When we play tennis against each other, and she's really trying and not just playing down to let me keep up, she absolutely destroys me. A real game would be 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, no question. It's basically a mercy killing.

Congrats on missing the point.

Here's what I'll do. I"ll play all out for 20 minutes; have a few thousand people in the place watching me; televise it nationwide; have an outcome riding on my shooting. Then I'll go up and not look like Sport Goofy with a shot so ugly it causes a reasonable person to question whether I've ever attempted a free throw before in my life.

And I should add that this has FT talk has nothing to do with the Gophers in particular. The average NCAA player shoots about 69% from the line and the Gophers shoot 70%.
