WCCO: Duluth East Big Man Has Big Hopes For Nike Tournament (Akolda Manyang)

I was very impressed with Manyang as well. He played excellent in both games IMO. Tubby was there for the 2nd game and should offer him based on his potential.

He looks interesting, but no D-1 offers yet. If Tubby doubles up on bigs, I could see it but I can't see an early offer. This is a very important, as all are, recruiting class. I have no doubt Tubby will use all 4 tenders and it appears to be going well, but I wouldn't take Manyang as the first or second recruit. I'd let this play out. Our NIT run and preseason rankings are helping recruiting IMO. My guess is spring recruit at best.

I think it would be foolish to not leave one scholarship with how loaded the Minnesota class of 2014 is. Unless all 4 scholarships are used on players that can contribute right away, it would just be foolish.

If he gets the 4 players he wants in 2013, he only needs 2 players in 2014. If he gets the 2 he really wants in 2014, he only needs the 2. That's far from foolish. I'm starting to read the 2015 class looks very good also. He'll have 5 for that class. Very little banking of tenders happens in the real world, and when it does it is usually an unexpected misfortune. I'm sure it happened at some point in time, but I don't recall the U ever banking a basketball scholarship.

Totally agree.

But if you saw him yesterday blocking shots with regularity and running the court as fast as he did you would think about an offer. Especially since he not played a lot of basketball.

I didn't mean to come across negative. A 7-1 shot blocker who can run the floor certainly has my attention. I would build with an EE or a C like Iowa signed this past year. Then I look at PF. Tubby has several offers out there for PF. Next I go PG, or at the very least a combination guard who can give us 10 minutes at the point as a frosh. If we can get all that, I think Manyang with a redshirt season makes some sense. Several ways we can go.

IMO we have the core for the next 3 years. The 2013 group is the next wave. I'm really looking forward to how Tubby puts it together and personally have no doubt he will.

From what I saw yesterday, he's a project. He's got the foot-speed and the length but the hands and the head aren't there. He was constantly being moved or moving himself out of good position to defend or rebound. He had little confidence in his post moves and threw the ball away a few times when he was able to catch. Perhaps he will improve his game a lot this summer playing against this top-flight competition, but it was pretty obvious to me why he hasn't got any big offers yet. Getting caught smoking and losing his eligibility to play at State throws up an additional red flag.

Manyang has a ways to go without a doubt. Bigs are the slowest to develop from my perspective. I also do not know who Tubby is after and who he is likely to get. He would likely redshirt so as a current junior he would not play until the 2014-15 season which gives him a lot of time to develop. I don't know about you but I get the feeling that Tubby has a very real chance of getting Tyus, Vaughn, Kyle Washington, Matt Thomas and Schilling amongst others.

According to my "source", Manyang has 5 offers. My friend was going into High Performance Academy, which apparently has dance studios as well as basketball, and noticed that there were basketball teams present. She said that when "the tallest guy" walked by she couldn't help but ask, "How tall are you?" He answered 7 foot 2. They had a friendly conversation; he said he was from Duluth, had 5 offers, and wanted to go to school down south.

Boom, there you have it. I'm guessing she talked with Manyang. I'm not really even sure if I believe that he has 5 offers. Either a) he was including PWO offers or b) a bunch of teams offered after watching him at the EYBL.

Edit: Maybe he was including D2 offers.

I actually wouldn't be all that surprised if Tubby offered Manyang. To my knowledge, we haven't really offered very many big men this year. The only one I can think of is the kid from Milwaukee. Maybe it's kind of a down year for bigs in the Midwest?

Washington, Schilling and Foster are higher priority than Deandre Downey. Tubby has offered all 3, I also believe they offered Goodluck Okobonoh, but i could be wrong.

They did offer Goodluck

You're right. For some reason I was thinking as Schilling and Foster as 3s instead of 4s. Okobonoh is a huge reach IMO.

Yeah i put him in last because i dont think they are recruiting him that hard but I could be wrong. They appear to really want either Foster or Schilling as 1 of the assistants or Tubby was watching them all weekend during the EYBL.
