Coming off a horrendous shooting game against New Mexico, Minnesota (6-3) takes on North Dakota (4-6) in a 3:00 PM Wednesday matinee. The Gopher shooting stroke slumbered after the noon start against New Mexico (Minnesota shot: FG 30%, 3PT 20.8% and FT 66.7%). Hopefully the extra three hours will loosen up the elbows.

North Dakota losses: Iowa (83-61), UT Martin, Drake, San Francisco, Oregon (77-51) and South Dakota.
North Dakota wins: Omaha, Northern Iowa, Western Illinois and North Dakota State.

Makailah Dyer is the Fighting Hawks leading scorer at 14.3 points a game.
Mia Loyd is their best player with 13.6 points and 9.7 rebounds per game
Samantha Roscoe is from Perth, Australia.

OF NOTE: On tonight’s coaching show, Stollings said Allina Starr and Kynadi Johnson are ready to play… sometime. I’d love to see one of them Wednesday-if just to fill out the box score (seven players played versus the Lobos).

And welcome back Jackie!

• Makailah Dyer and Mia Loyd lead the Fighting Hawks with averages of 14.3 and 13.6 points per game, respectively. Loyd, the Big Sky’s Preseason Player of the Year and a high school teammate of Allina Starr at DeLaSalle, nearly averages a double-double, pulling down 9.7 rebounds per contest.
• The Gophers won last year’s matchup in Grand Forks 68-55, led by Shae Kelley (24 points/nine rebounds) and Amanda Zahui B. (15 points/16 rebounds). Carlie Wagner added 14 points, and Rachel Banham had six early before her knee injury. Dyer, Loyd and Leah Szabla (all returners) were in double figures for UND.
• Fighting Hawks assistant coach Jackie Voigt played for the Gophers 2008-12

It was against North Dakota last year that Banham blew out here acl.....@ND

Coach needs to get out of that 4-5 guard offense and get more of an inside game. Banham and Wagner took 42 of the 66 shots against New Mexico. That is ridiculous.

Coach plays with who and what she has.

GO GOPHERS!!!

Gophers up 24-19 at halftime. Bailey (1-9) and Banham (3-10) are a combined 4-19. The rest of the team is 7-14.

Women win 57-47. A win is a win, but not very impressive against a 4-7 North Dakota .

They'll play better once they are on TV..........................Jan 7 vs Illinois.:cheer:

This team needs a jolt or at least a player providing a jolt. (Iowa has Tania Davis a 5’4” bundle of energy injected into the lineup when things stagnate.) When Minnesota’s play stagnates, the Gophers have trouble kicking it up a notch. The 2nd quarter was perhaps this season’s worst stretch of basketball. Minnesota led 19-8 at the start and 24-19 at the end. FIVE POINTS! During the quarter North Dakota committed 11 turnover and 5 fouls. Minnesota’s numbers were 5 turnovers (including 3 consecutive by Wagner) and five fouls. UND tried to give the game away and the Gophers wouldn’t take it.

Stollings obviously decided pre-game to combat North Dakota’s size by running a battery of post players in and out of the game. The Gopher post combo delivered 17 points despite some missed layups. Unfortunately, UND still pogoed untouched under the hoop and out rebounded Minnesota 46-34.

A bigger concern is that poor three point shooting has officially moved from a down turn to a recession (4-19 today). Here’s hoping the three point stroke will be found in some Christmas stockings along with Carlie’s game and a little New Year’s jolt juice.

Of note: Kynadi Johnson took part in the warmups for the first time this season.
