Was in Duluth for the weekend and watched the game in a local bar with some other season ticket holders.
It was just the four of us in a virtually empty place until just after halftime. Then a large group of hockey parents (in town for a tournament) showed up as well as a couple dozen locals. Just about filled the place up.
The Gophers were on about 4 tv's, and there were a lot of the typical negative comments.
To combat the naysayers, my buddies and I began cheering loudly every time something good happened, and it started to rub off on everyone else.
By the middle of the 4th quarter, the bar was quite boisterous. When we forced the big fumble with three minutes left, the place roared, and then got even louder on the clinching touchdown.
In the closing seconds, a group sittting behind us started the M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A cheer, and the whole place joined in. There were high-fives all around.
It was a great scene, and I was damn proud to be a Gopher fan.

I've always thought that if the Gophers made a run and had like a 10-11 win season they would turn this state on its ear. People deep down really want to be Gopher fans, but we just have not had that season to turn the corner.

Great job, CP. This is one of my favorite posts ever in GopherHole. The Gophers need lots more fans like you.

Great post. I'm from Duluth and (despite the turnout at the sport's bar in the first half), Duluth has surprisingly it's fair share of Gopher fans. I'm surprised Kill hasn't gone up there during his offseason tours around the state - a major population center in the upper half of the state, you would think Kill would get up there sometime.

We are a Sleeping Giant

I believe this as well.

I've said before that Gopher Football is one of the best kept secrets in the state. The games are a lot of fun to attend, the stadium is beautiful on fall afternoons, and it's great time spent with family and friends. As the product on the field keeps improving, more and more people will figure this out as well.

It was a lot of fun. I'm also originally from Duluth, and you are correct about the large number of Gopher fans up there, including a pretty decent number of season ticket holders. A few years ago I went to Sneaker's in downtown Duluth to watch one of our bowl games, and was surprised to find the place packed with Gopher fans at 5:00 on New Year's Eve.

Thanks for that fun story! Luv it
