Central Corridor work near U will
cause delays
Construction on the Washington
Avenue bridge will pinch traffic
beginning on Saturday.
Last update: February 24, 2011 - 10:23 PM
Traffic on the Washington Avenue Bridge
near the University of Minnesota will be
restricted to a single lane in each direction
starting Saturday as work begins on the
Central Corridor light-rail project.
If weather allows, construction crews will
close the bridge's inner lanes to remove a
median at the east end of the bridge.
Gophers hockey and basketball fans should
expect delays or take the 10th Avenue or
Interstate 35W bridges as alternate routes to
Williams and Mariucci arenas.
As work on the project progresses, drivers
will see more lane shifts in early March that
will close the entire south side of the bridge
to make way for construction equipment that
will replace the vehicle deck and add tracks
for Central Corridor trains.
In 2012, traffic will be shifted to the south
side while the vehicle deck is removed on the
north side.
