Wally was reportedly out with the flu and did not travel to the Big Ten Tournament game, and then Amelia just tweeted this:

"Wally Ellenson has the flu. Not sure whether he will make the trip to Austin. #Gophers"

I hope he's alright. That's a long time to be flu-stricken.

Go Gophers!!

Don't need him around spreading it. This team can't handle anyone of importance not playing.

Hopefully that opens up a seat for the sports psychologist.

As a Tubby supporter I must say a mistake was made here - the kid should have been redshirted.

Holy Jesus Martha, let's start another rumor.

Yeah, let's not start rumors already. I'm sure there's nothing to the story other than he's sick and they don't want the rest of the team getting sick too. Even if it isn't contagious, whats the point of traveling if you're throwing up and miserable?

If it's a mistake, it's Wally's, not Tubby's. He said himself he does not want to be in school for more than 4 years.

Sounds like Wally Ellenson has pneumonia and has lost a significant amount of weight and will not play in the first round matchup versus UCLA.

Yikes. Have known a couple of people to have this happen lately. Hope he's OK.

Hope Wally gets better and we make the Sweet 16 so he can get some playing time in the tourney!

So does this mean he travels with team. Pneumonia is only really contagious during the worst days (early on) of the affliction.. after that, not so much. So I would assume his traveling is based on if he has the energy and is up for travel?

I am bummed for him, not for missing a chance to play.. that is not likely to happen barring a blowout or serious foul trouble, but at missing the excitement of the NCAA tournament. The press conference, the hotel, the vibe, etc. Get better Wally.

Why red shirt a guy who won't use the 5th year, pointless!

Can someone point to this quote?

I really don't think a freshman fully understands whether they want to be in college 4 or 5 years. I also don't think I have ever seen a contributing junior at a major D-1 school decide to skip their senior year and head out into the real world.

Unless he plans to be a Rhodes scholar or something, this makes no sense.

You are right. There is not such a thing. Tubby did it. In fact Tubby was the one who screwed up the economy too. Everything is Tubby's fault these days.

If you had half of a brain, you would understand that a coach cannot or does not redshirt a player unless the player and his parents agree with it.

Dec 12:
"In a surprising move, the Gophers lifted Ellenson's redshirt 12 games into the season. After mulling over the situation for an extended period, Smith met with Ellenson and his parents on Monday night. They came to the conclusion that the Wisconsin native would begin his initial year eligibility, despite the season already being nearly six weeks old.

"He wanted to play. His parents felt comfortable with wanting to play," Smith said. "They were all in agreement that lets get him in there and get him going, see how he does and go from there.""

Jan 9:
"MINNEAPOLIS -- There was no changing Wally Ellenson's mind.

The Gophers' true freshman guard didn't care that he had already more than a month of the season with a broken hand. He had no intentions of idly watching his eighth-ranked team march through a bruising Big Ten schedule. If he had a chance to play now, he was going to seize it.

And that was his message to coach Tubby Smith. Smith had been blunt and upfront with him when giving Ellenson the choice between salvaging a full year of eligibility by taking a redshirt or playing where he could this year.

There was no hiding that getting playing time over nearly halfway through the season on a team with an established rotation would be exceedingly difficult task. But that was a non-issue for the 18-year-old freshman

"It wasn't a hard decision for me," Ellenson said. "I wanted to play this year. If I could help one second of a game I was going to play this year. I don't want to be in college for five years. I have more goals and dreams in the game of basketball, so I just wanted to get playing right away.""

It is simple. He fancies himself a professional basketball player and doesn't want to wait around five years to get to that. Here's the quote:

@ameliarayno: Smith said Wally Ellenson should make the trip to Austin w/ the team. FR is still sick, but no longer contagious. #Gophers

Go Gophers!!

Good for Wally.. hopefully he has fun and enjoys the trip. Hopefully he can look back and say that during his 4 years at Minnesota, he was in the tourney every year.. regardless of who the coach is...

And hopefully he is the starting SG while his brother is the starting PF for a deep run Gophers team in three years!

And hopefully I am still alive and kicking when this happens.
