Six potential sleeper teams Dick Vitale ESPN.com | March 6, 2013
This college basketball season has been wild and wacky. There aren't any dominant teams, and we have seen that, on any given night, shock city can hit anybody. My friends, that is why this year's March Madness is tough to predict. That is the beauty of the sport, that it is so wide open. There are probably 15 teams out there, capable of winning six in a row and cutting down the nets in Atlanta. As we head into the final week of the regular season, there will be a lot at stake. Schools want to build momentum leading into Championship Week and then March Madness. I have been asked several times about sleeper teams come tourney time. It is still a bit early to tell how the seedings will work themselves out, but for now, I will project six schools that could be dangerous in the big dance. These are schools that I believe will be seeded below the top four in their respective region. A lot could change in the next few weeks. Injuries could take their toll. Some squads could fade and struggle into the tournament. Here are a super six schools that could make some noise.

Saint Louis Billikens The Billikens have warmed up after a 3-3 start. They beat VCU and Butler, giving Jim Crews' team a real boost. Kwamain Mitchell's return has given the team a spark as well. This club plays solid defense, and that is an important attribute come tournament time. If Saint Louis stays hot and wins the A-10 tournament, it could grab a higher seed.

Wisconsin Badgers Bo Ryan's team plays with so much heart, passion and intensity. The defensive effort is so crucial, and they will take time off the clock and shorten games in tournament scenarios. The coach always gets the most out of his talent, and this will be a very difficult out in the tournament. The Badgers are battle-tested from Big Ten dogfights all season long.

UNLV Rebels Is Dave Rice's team peaking at the right time? The Mountain West has been a solid league, and the Runnin' Rebels have a lot of talent. Don't neglect them when filling out the bracket. North Carolina State Wolfpack Last season, Mark Gottfried's team made a serious tournament run before falling to Kansas. That experience could help this time around. Expectations were so high going into this season, and it has been a rollercoaster for the Wolfpack. It could end up in a positive way at the big dance for CJ Leslie and company.

Illinois Fighting Illini Any team that could beat Indiana, Gonzaga and Butler deserves some consideration. Guard play is important in the tournament and the duo of Brandon Paul and D. J. Richardson has experience and the ability to do some damage. There is no shame is mixed results in the tough Big Ten. This team could surprise.

Minnesota Golden Gophers Tubby Smith has an athletic team capable of putting things together. Trevor Mbakwe and Rodney Williams can be tough to stop on the baseline. Andre and Austin Hollins can shine on the perimeter and Smith can go deep off the bench.

I love seeing this on ESPN, but Dick Vitale lost all credibility on this one when he mentions our "deep" bench. Let's keep up the good press.

Thought that was odd, too.

Perhaps Dukie V hasn't noticed Tubby has shortened his bench, and that (polite golf clap here) he's given his subs a better chance to succeed by not putting them all in the game at once.

I think Dickie is talking about Tubby's NEW proposed bench:

Andre Hollins, Elliason and Coleman

:)

The problem with the Gophers is not the talent. Talent alone they should make the final 8 if not the final 4. They should make noise.

Wisconsin is an odd choice as well. Bo gets huge results in the regular season but has consistently underwhelmed in the tournament. Even the years they have done well, they have almost always lucked out and ended playing high seeds that had upset the lower seeds.

You need to watch some more basketball if you really believe this.

They have the talent to make a sweet 16 run at least. Not sure about elite 8 or final 4 but if they can continue to play the way they have the past few games the sky really is the limit. Very interested to see how they fare on the road tonight against an opponent they should have little trouble beating.

Agree. They are always a tough out, and still manage to find their way out in the Tourney in their usual fashion. This team doesn't seem any more built to go deep than any previous one. Yeah, they have Dekker but Bo still has him leashed. And their point guard situation is weaker than its been in years.

Tonight's the night that will tell me if the Gophers have truly turned the corner.

Great win with perhaps their season on the line over Indiana, followed by a workmanlike spanking of an inferior team. Now tonight it's time to beat a team we're supposed to beat on the road. Gophers haven't won on the road since Big Ten road opener. I'll be convinced Gophers are ready for the postseason (BTT and NCAA) if they take care of business vs. the Huskers. ... no matter whether it's pretty, ugly, nail-biter, blow-out, and/or anything in between.

I tend to agree. I forgot it's been that long since they've won on the road, and the last three have been kinda ugly. Gotta flip that script around tonight.

You think they have top 8 talent? Really? Not knocking your view, but top 8? They are probably the 5th or 6th most talented team in the B10 alone, IMO

I don't know what caused the downward spin in the B1G season, but in the non-conf. games, they were playing like a team and looked good, except for maybe against Duke, which I felt needed to happen so they could get a taste how the elite teams play. When they are playing hard and as a team, they get the wins such as MS and In. which btw were top ranked teams. So yes, I do believe that they should be playing a whole lot better then they are and can get into the elite 8. This is not out of the question. Talent wise, they should be able to get it done if they continue as they have the last 2 games.

Good thoughts, I just disagree they are that talented. Dre is not a stud, Austin and Rodney are not great, Trevor can dominate, and the rest of the team is average B10 players, IMO. I dont disagree that when they are firing on all points they can beat people, but if they were that talented they would have beaten some of those teams on talent alone. And if they are final four talented, Tubby should be fired for not being able to coach them.
