Looks like the Gopher's success in Puerto Rico will be buried on page 10 now with Childress being fired...

That's not really a bad thing. Right now it's perfectly fine( if not preferred) to fly under the radar.

I'm sure you're taking no pleasure whatsoever in that, Art.

The Vikes will be non-factors for years to come.

My thoughts exactly. Let all those who obsess about everything that bunch in purple do (like KFAN) continue to ramble on endlessly. Let the Gophers just do their thing and let the purple bobos talk about that team until their vocal cords finally give out.

First, I'm sure that makes you happy. Second, they already got most of what they were going to get out of it. Today's paper, today's morning sports shows, etc. It's not as though they were going to discuss it for a week. Plus the NC win probably got more play then the WV win was going to.

You guys are insane. It would be fantastic if the U could be the talk of the town in the local press just once for something other than hiring or firing a coach. There is a chance to really build some momentum here and instead it's all purple all the time.

With the way the winter sports season is going, they will be. I just don't see how the specific timing of this 'stealing thunder' from the WVU win is that big of a deal.

Im disapointed becuase I attendend that mockery of a football game Sunday and during the drive home to Iowa I listened to the Gophers game on wcco 830. I thought I would be able to catch some highlights on tv but ESPN has had no mention of it at all. Kinda pathetic just another reason I hate ESPN.

You really wonder why ESPN didn't show many highlights? It's getting to be the playoff push for the biggest sporting league in North America (NFL) and the colleges basketball season literally just started. Obviously i know the gophers are gonna be ranked and im pumped about it but if you were not a fan of minnesota or west virginia it's 2 non ranked teams playing each other in a somewhat meaningless tournament. If the sport is played on sunday and it's not the nfl, that game didn't happen. Ask Jimmy Johnson even though i dont consider that a sport

I didn't see anything about us on Sportcenter last night. Also, the ESPN bball section online had a pic of us with a play button, but then when you hit play it was highlights of Vandy and UNC.

You can't be serious.

You know how you get the press to talk about you? Win something of importance. I'm as happy as anyone about winning the Puerto Rico Classic, but the average Twin Cities sports fan couldn't give two sh*ts about it. Outside of hockey, which around 3 or 4 people in the state care about, no U sports team has won anything of significance in decades.

People have this crazy idea that media will talk about what they personally want to hear. Rather, generally speaking, they will talk about what the average person wants to hear.

As someone who loves to call others out for exaggeration and hyperbole, you need to be called out for both of the above here. '3 or 4 people' care about hockey? Right. And it's also far from true that the average MN sports fan 'couldn't give two sh*ts' about winning a basketball game against NC or a team that was just in the Final Four. I'd also call the 1997 Final Four 'something of signfiicance' and spare me the 'it didn't happen' bit. It was pretty significant in 1997.

However, it's not realistic to think ESPN's going to have highlights of a college basketball game anywhere near the top of Sports Center on a Sunday night, and the Vikings were also going to dominate the talk today, regardless of whether Childress got fired or not.

No, I think everyone else has it about right. If this team is as good as we all hope it is then they'll get plenty of pub all season long when they continue to win. Who's going to steal their thunder once the Vikes continue to implode? The Wolves? The Wild? The hockey Gophers? Unlikely.

'3 or 4 people' care about hockey? Right.

Clearly, I was serious. Nope, not joking at all. I have no idea how many people attend Gopher and Wild hockey games. I just assumed they built the Xcel with 18,000 seats for funsies.

And it's also far from true that the average MN sports fan 'couldn't give two sh*ts' about winning a basketball game against NC or a team that was just in the Final Four.

False. Despite what you may think, the overwhelming majority of Twin Cities sports fans don't care about Gopher sports, and especially non-conference tournaments for Gopher basketball. I'm sure you're real in-tune with the pulse of the Cities, living in Virginia and all.

I'd also call the 1997 Final Four 'something of signfiicance' and spare me the 'it didn't happen' bit.

Winning by cheating is no better than losing. It didn't happen. I think I'll take the word of the NCAA over some anonymous rube on the interwebz.

The earlier parts of your post were a lot of work to more or less repeat what I just said.

Ah. So you insist on taking everyone else literally, including when they make a spelling error, to make a 'point,' but they are not to do the same when you grossly exaggerate to make a point. Anyone can see you were not serious, but you are being a hypocrite.

'overwhelming majority.' I'd call that more hyperbole and untrue. Gopher basketball is probably the 3rd most popular sport in MN most years. Even the Vikings only get a 30-40 rating. That means 60-70% of the people aren't watching. If you want to be literal, no single team has an 'overwhelming majority' of the public caring about them.

Right, because believing something you saw with your own eyes is ridiculous and it's much better to take the word of some 'anonymous rube on the interwebz' who says it didn't happen.

This is all annecdotal, but I had two people bring up Gopher basketball at work this morning that have never and would never watch a Gopher basketball game because they don't care about sports. If non-sports fans are aware of the Gophers winning games, they are a big deal. Of course now everyone in the office is talking about Chilly instead. The wins this weekend are the most important wins for this program in a long time, because now people actually have expectations. The same thing would've happened last year after the Butler game had we played and beat WV instead of laying an egg against Portland.

I understand that the main focus of the media will always be the Vikings, but there is normal Monday Vikings talk, and then there is "the coach got fired on Monday" Vikings talk.

DP - our friend B even watched the Gopher Basketball game yesterday. Outside of the NCAA and BT Tournament games, it's the first game he's watched in a long time. I'm not saying he is the end-all-be-all example, but my point is that the average MN fan does start to care when you beat a team with the name of North Carolina. It gets people's attention.

Just win and the headlines will take care of themselves in due time.
In two years there may be no Minnesota Vikings, and Rodney Williams will be a senior.

When have I ever, even once, stated or insinuated that I take everyone literally?

And how is making a joke the same as misspelling 3rd-grade level words? Were you joking with that misspelled word when you've done it every single time you've posted it on this website? I don't get how saying "greater then" is even funny.

Even the Vikings only get a 30-40 rating. That means 60-70% of the people aren't watching.

Not sure what that has to do with anything, but okely dokely.

I never said that, but good job proving me wrong on an opinion I never advanced. You get a gold star.

(P.S. How does my taint smell? I've often wanted to get down there and have a gander at it myself, but I'm just not quite flexible enough.)

You and dboy have more in common than similar names.

Gee, I'm glad to see you're keeping it mature. I'll just go ahead and let any future temptation to respond to you drop. While you're clearly intelligent and make good points often, it's not worth getting dragged into debates with a narcissistic jerk any longer. You win, I guess, since you've never been wrong in all your posts on this board. You can have my gold star.

Nope. I've been wrong often. The difference between us is that I let it go at "my apologies" instead of killing 8,000 virtual trees defending and rationalizing my wronghood.
