Vikings resign Marcus Sherels

2 year 4 million.

Sherels can also earn $300,000 in incentives for his punt return average, and a Pro Bowl selection, per Pelissero.

The 28-year-old is considered by many to be one of the premier special teams players in the NFL.

Sherels recorded eight tackles while playing in all 16 games for the Vikings. The veteran cornerback last missed a game during the 2010 season.

Glad to see it. He's a valuable return man, not in the sense that he will break off a home run every year, but he's a smart returner that doesn't make many mistakes fielding the ball. Calls fair catches in the right situations, returns in the right situations, avoids the ball when he should, etc.

Have a friend that works for the Vikings that told me that every year they go into camp thinking: "it's too bad, we will probably end up having to cut Sherels at some point." and every year he squeaks through by being so reliable and solid that the fact that he's special teams only doesn't seem to matter.

Yeah he really has been an amazing story for his whole career. You look at him and think no way is this guy an NFL player yet he has put together a nice long career and just keeps trucking along. Hopefully a decent portion of that 4 mil is guaranteed because as you said he always seems to be on that edge of getting cut/making the team.

Hopefully Marcus can keep on returning punts for the Vikings for the next few years.

I took so much abuse when I told everyone on gopher hole that he would play in the NFL his senior year in college.

Marcus is an awesome you man and a great athlete. Truth be told his real success in life has happened yet.

He will be more successful in his career after football than he was in football.

Marcus and his brother Mike do my hometown proud!

I would bet most people were probably thinking his play at the DB position which without the punt return and special teams duties wouldn't be enough to keep him on the roster. Glad he's found his niche in the NFL and is successful at it.

I am astounded it has been 12+ hours and none of our anal retentive posters pointed out the Yikes re-signed Marcus, rather than put him out to pasture.

They were, but they didn't understand that his play solely at that position was good enough for an NFL career.

At the DB position? He would not be on the roster now if he was being rated only on his play on defense.

You are correct only if he was competing against someone of equal ability that did return punts.

The fact is there are other players on this team that aren't db's who can return punts. As a result Marcus is making this team because of his ability to play DB.

Don't forget his value on covering kicks, he is always the first one on the ball. That also makes him more valuable than others who just return punts.

True dat; I'm just saying he first must be competent at the position he plays which is DB.

Devin Hester he's not.

Marcus reminds me a lot of Chris Walsh. He was never really a threat as a receiver but could play there when needed. He made his mark almost exclusively on special teams because he was so good at covering kicks and making plays. Marcus is the same way, he would get exposed if he had to be a starter at DB, but he can do enough to be useable on defense that the team can justify keeping him around for his above average skills on special teams.
