Vikings 27/Lions 0Thanksgiving 1969

The Vikings clinched the divisional title as a result of the win for a second consecutive year. According to Jim Klobuchar’s book “True Hearts & Purple Heads” there was no hot water for the post game showers—can you imagine after playing in the blizzard & mud-soaked conditions? Apparently, it had no impact on the post-game locker room championship revelry.

I read Jim's book too. He wrote a column about my father after he passed so I have a soft spot. Do you remember the $20 left on the bar room floor story? "As far as I know it is still there".

Great story—Jim running a 6:42 mile when Van Brocklin made a bet he couldn’t break 7:00 and they counted down as though it was nip & tuck for him to break 7:00. Jim worked with my dad (who was a copy boy) and my grandfather at the Associated Press. Jim wouid always comment how he enjoyed seeing father & son working together. He wrote a very kind inscription on my tattered copy of the book.

Loved all the stories in "True Hearts and Purple Heads". A must read for any Viking fan that likes/loves team history. (1961-1969) Plus, I loved that 1969 Thanksgiving Vikings Lions game. Jim Klobuchar was a prolific writer and had the gift of descriptive language. To bring it around to the Gophers, the Lions TE and Pro Football HOF Charlie Sanders (Gopher 1967 grad) had the longest gain for the Lions that day. A 31 yard catch...late in the 4th quarter.

I remember watching this game. Wow! That was hard fought football played in the elements. The Marshall Int and run then lateral to Allan Page was amazing.

The one TV show that I would never miss as a kid was This Week in the NFL. Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshire.

Those were the days when football was really tough. Tough for the players and tough for the fans, especially in late fall and winter. No beautiful enclosed stadiums.
