Video: Memorial Stadium Memories. Oct. 29, 1955 - Minnesota Stuns No. 10 USC, 25-19

Looks like someone at GopherSports.com forgot to take this video off premium status

when you click on the link to go watch it you are prompted for your gold zone username & password. i think this is just an unintended mistake by them as this is supposed to be a weekly video series about memorial stadium memories and the previous week's segment (1977 - UM's win over Washington) was available to all people.

if anyone knows someone over at gophersports.com or how to pass along this fyi about the video to them then perhaps you can ask them to take the "premium" status off the highlight video?? if so, it would be appreciated.

fyi - there is a much shorter video highlight available a little further down the page of one of the gopher touchdown runs during the UM vs. USC game. that video seems to be available to all without a username & password.

Perhaps there is something wrong with my computer or things changed along the way, but my attempt to watch both the 1977 Washington game and the 1955 USC game was treated as a request to watch premium material (requests for registered email addresses and passwords), so I was unable to view......

Is the U trying to get more people to buy into the Gold Zone with this Memorial Stadium memories thing? Give me a break. They would make more money bundling all their Gopher highlights into DVD's and selling them that way.

not sure if there is any kind of alterior motive. as i noted above the first week (UM vs. Washington - 1977) of this weekly feature was completely free whether you had a gold zone membership or not. i do think that the 1955 UM/USC highlights being behind the "premium" wall is actually an unintended mistake on their part that they haven't realized yet for some reason.

I only made that comment because I couldn't view it because i wasn't a Gold member.

Here is a good idea...why don't they give free membership to all season ticket holders (basketball, hockey, football). At least for a couple of years just to get people use to the service. Then yanke it and charge everyone somthing reasonable.

But I still go back and wonder why they don't put all these games on a DVD. Beyond me at how the U does not market to people like me. They seem to want to stuff Gold Country with $70 sweatshirts and 30 different kinds of shot glasses.

I was able to see both for free.

There are some problems on my explorer...I get an error. I was ok at home on the PC with vista on it.

And I got to see both for free. Nice upset...would love to see the same next year.

Doubt it's a mistake...it is labeled in the story as gold zone video.

Wouldn't mind USC facing those weather conditions again....however unlikely in September 2010. Nasty stuff.

Can't wait for the first snow game in the Bank.

Sorta off topic...on the other board someone mention the chairbacks you can rent won't have a pad...just a back? What??????? How do you screw that up? I'd be favor in the legislature stepping in on that one.

1955 USC game film

There will be another means of access to this, and selected other, Gopher football game films by late summer or early fall. The University of Minnesota Archives is preparing an exhibit on old Memorial Stadium that will open in Andersen Library sometime before the football season. The gallery exhibit should be a nifty attraction, and mighty convenient for West Bank tailgaters, because lots C-86, C-88, and C-89 are right next to Elmer L. Andersen Library, where the exhibit will be staged. There will also be an online exhibit that will include, among other things, links to selected games from the 1930s-60s, I believe. The USC game is definitely one of them.

That game was the first Gopher game I ever saw in person. I'll never forget lead-footed Gopher QB Don Swanson lumbering 67 yards on a quarterback sneak, while Jaguar Jon Arnett was could do nothing at all from scrimmage in the snow, although I think he did break loose on a kickoff return.

Wow...what a game to be at. In the video they showed the Arnett return....Dick Larson made an incredible play to bring him down before he scored.

1953 Minn vs. Mich...
Paul Giel single handedly beats Michigan. It is unbelievable - the guy was 5'10 180. He punted, returned kicks, played cornerback, and ran the offense as a sigle wing halfback. I have never seen a gopher highlight to match it... Michigan was #1 in the country when he did it too... The punt return is crazy.

I am quite sure the game film from that 1953 Michigan game is another one destined to appear on the Memorial Stadium online exhibit later this summer.

The Minnesota Daily ran this editorial a few days after Minnesota beat Michigan 22-0 on Oct. 24, 1953.

[Headline: We Still Get Enthusiastic When the Team is Winning]

Saturday afternoon was a memorable one in Memorial Stadium. The football Gophers were at their fighting best in beating arch rival Michigan to win back the Little Brown Jug after 11 years.

A modest guy named Paul Giel put on the finest display of football showmanship we have seen in the stadium for many years. But what we like best is that it was strictly a team win with every man contributing to the victory.

The University of Michigan football marching band put on an excellent precision show before the game and during halftime. The University band came up to its usual high standards.

There's something kind of stimulating about a warm Saturday in the stadium -- and it's especially good to see that students still can get enthusiastic about football.
