Video Highlights: Gophers Win The Jug: 1977, 1986, 2005

Love Rickey Foggie. Beat Meatchicken. Beat Iowa. He never lost a game against Becky Badger in his 4 straight years as QB.

If anyone addresses the team this week it should be #22 Maroney and #3 Cupito

You know Gophers players that were most relevant to the most recent win against Michigan.
You could tell the Gophers had a certain fire about them in Ann Arbor that day, you could see it in their eyes, our team was eerily quiet, intense but they looked like they had lazer focus, were carrying themselves with there chins up and proud, and were well prepared to compete. Michigan under Lloyd Carr was under fire from the fan base and reeling a little bit from all of the turnovers and criticism. After the 2003 collapes, this game felt like was long over due PAYBACK in Ann Arbor. Police officers even taunted us as we were walking to the stadium, your from Minnesota, why did you even bother to show up?
Gary Russel the left to soon running back, even ran like a guy posessed, he was taking some licks and giving them back. Russel was dishing everything back Michigan was giving him and then some.
Maroney and Cupito were both absolute "Warriors" on that day in 2005 and although Maroney took a lot of crap for planting the Minnesota flag on Michigans M at mid field I always admired him for the gall it took to go out and play that game, let it all hang out and take the jug and plant that flag on Michigans M.

At the Big house on that day in the corner near the end zone Michigan fans were taunting Maroney not unlike they will do to David Cobb, they will be all over him with the insults, you cannot do this you cannot do that. One thing I remember about the one dude that was really getting after Maroney he was letting him have it, "YOUR MINNESOTA, your NOTHING" but a piece of paper we wipe our butts with.
Maroney probably didn't know what the guy was even babbling about, I looked at Maroney and he just put a finger to his mouth and smiled at the guy. That is when I knew not on this day, this day would be special and the Gophers would take it to Michigan at the line of scrimmage and on defense play like there hair was on fire as the Brew used to say.
Bryan Cupito, #3 he took shot after shot and snot bubbling hit against Michigan, you could hear the crunching and the helmets really thumping, Michigan was bringing there usual swagger, and Bryan Cupito kept taking the beating and kept on picking himself up and competing. One hit he took they even looked like they knocked his flack jacket loose, and his shoulder pads were cocked or knocked loose. They did eventually knock him out of the game in the Fourth quarter due to injury but you could tell on that day, Cupito was determined to put the ball on his guys and make throws where only his guys could make plays. Man did he take a beating, he had to be bruised, battered and I think even got a back injury, but you could see he would not quit or give up until they had to drag him off the field.
Michigan does not respect Minnesota and does not even consider them Competition but on that day in 2005 the Minnesota Guys dished it back and would not take "No" for an anwer.
That is what I will always remember most about that game in Ann Arbor in 2005, it was a lot of fun to see the guys celebrate and win the jug, but just the sheer amount of physical will they spent that day, on that day the Gophers could have beat just about anyone, they were that determined and played that hard. Even a down Michigan team, it takes that kind of effort from talented players, matching the hits and the pounding and dishing it back. That was real Big 10 football that day, a lot of Big 10 hits and the Gophers rose to the ocassion at hand, it was one hell of a football game. To them the "Jug" is a trinkett that sits in a closet in it's case and a chance to put it on that team they always beat.
To the Gophers it is a measure of "playing that damn hard".

What's LoMo up to these days? I know Russell had a stint in the CIFL (infamous for being the home to the River Monsters, led by Jared Lorenzen).

Also, can't forget that 2004 saw a collapse as well, this time in Ann Arbor. We were #13 in the country, up 24-17 with 13 minutes to play, and gave up the game-winning touchdown with just 1:57 left. 2005 was such sweet release after those two previous years.

I have been trying to find that picture of Maroney planting the "M" flag at Michigan in 2005. Can anybody help me out?

1977 handwritten and typed box score. Its a beauty. Gophers were 6 for 10 passing and the defense was smothering. Leach completed 13 of 29 passes for only 122. Was 4 for 7, 43 yards on last, futile drive.

Can't wait to add the 2014 edition!

Go Gophers!!

I was at the 1977 game. I was a Student at Augsburg and a friend of mine who went to the U worked with the boy scouts who served as ushers and ticket takers at Memorial Stadium. A bunch of us got walked through the gate and were able to watch the game which of course was fantastic. The best memory was walking across the Street to Stub and Herbs. The place was packed with post game revelers. On the television was not another football game but a boxing match featuring a young Leon Spinks and Minnesota's own fighting Frenchman, Scott LeDoux. LeDoux was a gamer, as usual, and the room was filled with blood lust from the football game. One of the great afternoons of my life!

Soooo happy to add 2014 highlights to this!!
