28 years ago today, Jim Valvano delivered his legendary speech at the first annual ESPY Awards before passing away two months later.
The backdrop: Valvano, who'd coached college hoops for 20 years — most notably at NC State, where the Wolfpack won the 1983 national title — was diagnosed with glandular cancer in June 1992.
Legacy: Valvano announced the launch of his V Foundation for Cancer Research during the speech, which to date has raised over $250 million.
