I don't mean to gripe - just noticing the difference in quality between the videos that the University of Minnesota puts out compared to this one from Nebraska. Is there any reason why the U couldn't put out game highlight videos like this one?

The Easy Answer

First win the game but coach Kill is working on that.

I almost prefaced the question with "aside from winning the game," but that's beside the point. Our video packages look like amateur hour, while this one from Nebraska is professional quality.

Obviously they're using broadcast footage instead of student-filmed footage from hand-held cameras on the sideline, like the U uses. I wonder why we do that.

The U's hockey videos this year are pretty awesome. Must be separate from football video crew?

That's a pretty good promotional video, but not a highlight video. The football team has had some really good promos as well - notably the "Uncommon" video. But for the sake of comparison, watch the below highlight clips from the Gophers' win over Iowa, and then compare it to the Nebraska video that I linked above. Surely you can see the difference in quality.

Actually as someone who works in the department I can shed a little light on the discrepancy.

The video production quality differences between B1G schools (and across college athletics in general) usually come down to staffing levels. Nebraska is generally acknowledged across college athletics as a leader in this area. They've had a department (8 staffers strong called HuskerVision) doing production for nearly 20 years. Staffing levels across the conference vary, but are generally between 8-10 (Nebraska, Michigan) and 2-3 (Northwestern, Illinois).

As of right now, the U has no such department, although we're on the verge of forming one. I think you'll see a nice boost in quality this season (although probably not to Nebraska levels) and it'll get better over time.

Glad to see people are paying attention though!

It's also $100,000 per video versus $20,000. A bigger budget makes a big difference.

thanks for the reasoned and well put response. hope you guys get the funding and support you need to grow the video production staff. and thanks for not taking offense to the rather unfair way that "everybody knows my name" put it when talking about the work you guys do on OUR behalf. thanks again for your guys time and efforts each saturday!

Did I say something unfair? If I did, I'm really sorry. I hope someone will explain how my words would offend.

You said nothing wrong, it is a valid opinion. Our highlights videos have been pretty bad, kind of odd they are all shot on handicams from the sidelines rather than have someone up in the box so the highlights are better.

Oh I don't think anyone was offended at all (I certainly wasn't) -- I fully admit that our highlights packages need improving, and they will improve this year for sure (and more the next year, and the next year, etc.) We love feedback from hardcore fans, you guys are our target audience!!
