Vegas Sun: TCF Stadium a "Game Changer"

They did it again!

I t seems that reporters never quite get it right. Here is a quote from the article about TCF:
Minnesota’s horseshoe-shaped stadium fits in with a burgeoning district on the northeastern edge of the St. Paul campus, which is also home to a series of biomedical research buildings.

Naturally, when you're averaging 21,000 fans per game what your program needs is a new $750,000,000 stadium.

I would suspect this is more about "other events" than UNLV football. The Colts and Cowboys (and soon the Vikings) have redefined the word "expensive" when it comes to stadiums. But eventually someone in Vegas is going to break all of the records and build the guadiest sports facility in the world, complete with a casino and hotel suite balconies over-looking the field very near the strip. And the facility will host everything you can think of (probaly even an NFL team marketed to Californians).

UNLV's field will be economically obsolete if they are not a significant partner in this project. They become a tenant of an eventual Vegas NFL franchise. And we know how that story ends.

By being the first to talk about it, it increases the likelihood that any such future project is built more to UNLV's needs.

I understand Vegas resident Sheldon Adelson has a few extra dollars laying around that he has no use for. Just saying.

And the NFL team shall be called, "The Los Angeles Gamblers of Las Vegas.":D

If they are talking that kind of money for a stadium in Las Vegas, it seems to indicate that the real target isn't UNLV, but an NFL team.

Bingo. I have heard the UNLV president, Neal Smatresk, talk about this exact thing. That stadium will be able to host a ton of events, many not directly related to the university, such as national political conventions. Las Vegas could also lose of some of their other their big events (CES, NFR, etc) if facilities are not kept up to date. I'm all for it, mostly to bring football to campus, where it has never (I think) been.
