USC Song Girls

I heard the TV announcer refer to the USC cheerleaders as the USC song girls. Is that a USC thing or are all cheerleaders now being called song girls? I don't follow USC, I'm pretty much a Big Ten guy (obviously).

That has been their name for many decades. It's just what they are called.
