What was the story behind those 15 to 20 players taking a knee and bowing in the end zone right in front of our students before the game? Don't know if they were mocking our students or there was another reason. Did anyone else notice it?

FCA

Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Wow, you've really never seen that before? Even here in Texas high school football, the team members who are part of the FCA take a knee and say a prayer before kickoff.

never like that

Never seen it like that. They went into the end zone and knelt down. Didn't know if it was a taunt to the students or not. Whenever I've seen it done it has always been done with both teams gathering together. All the times this has been done in the middle of the field and usually after the game has been completed.

Agreed

Saw it too at the game and didn't think twice...FCA most likely...but I'm originally a Georgia Bulldawg who's now a Golden Gopher.

Not unusual for the SEC...and maybe not USC or even the PAC 10 (a stretch on the latter?)...but not that common in the Big 10.

Our mascot Goldy got in trouble within the past couple of years for some antics around a player for PSU (I think) doing the same thing.

At least the SI magazines weren't flying yet. Would have been very poor form.

Go Gophers! Beat NIU!

Goldy wasn't mocking the guy he ws trying to pray with him but it turned-out the player was far more interested in the spotlight then humbling himself before God. Though being dressed as a 6 foot plus rodent does make it look like everything you do is some form of mockery.

I'm just glad that they ran the length of the field to the endzone and did it in the most conspicuous manner possible. I'm pretty sure God wouldn't have heard their prayers if they had done it privately in the locker room.

That is a good point. I'm not sure what Goldy's intentions were. But it would have been a great move for that PSU guy to stand up and either shake Goldy's hand or pat him on the back, smile and walk away.

This.

I'm not a theologian, but I'm pretty sure God only hears the prayers of those who make a spectacle out of themselves.

Whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray while standing in synagogues and on street corners so that people can see them. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you (Matthew 6:5-6).

Then again, what does he know about it?

he knows plenty:

I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God ( Luke 12:8 )

So, you will take a verse which could vaguely be said to apply over one which is much more clearly applicable.

clearly applicable??

I'm not sure i've seen a street corner or synagogue at TCF..

Why does one person want another person's religion to conform?

These kids believe that it's their duty to honor God and to do it publicly - to acknowledge him before men. I don't pray in public, but I get that.

Just because you would do it differently doesn't mean that you're better than them or that they're worse than you.
