Senior guard DeAndre Mathieu, entering his second season at Minnesota, said that in just one year Richard Pitino became his favorite coach he's ever had.
"We can't believe he's only like 32," Mathieu said. "You'd think he is like 40, 41, one of those older guys, because his knowledge is off the charts. It's really crazy that he is only a few years older than us. He was raised by a legend."
At Minnesota, Richard Pitino succeeded Tubby Smith, who bemoaned the school's lack of a practice facility. One will still be built, but Pitino did not wait for that. He turned the recreational gym near the basketball offices into a more than adequate practice facility. And now players can practice, lift weights and go to study hall all in one building.
"Honestly, I don't see what we don't have," Minnesota senior guard Andre Hollins said. "We have everything in a centralized location. He has changed the entire culture of the program. We don't worry about what we don't have."
