USA today asks coaches about cheating - Best answer -Tubby - Worst answer - Calipari

Wow. An interesting range of answers to be sure. Massamino came across like his was guilty of illicitly poaching away players, just based on his response opener.

Tubby's answer was rather rambling and unfocused, but his point was buried in there. Outside parties are pulling these kids in dozens of different directions, and it's not right. A school or coach that will go that extra step illegally for a kid, has got to have an edge in most cases.

These days, Tubby cannot do anything right. I'd say, let deport him to Canada or Mexico. What do you think?

Unregistered - good find. I like that Tubby is so forthright:

Have you ever lost a recruit because you would not cheat?

"I've got to say yes. Yes. Plain and simple, because somebody asked me for something and I didn't do it and they went somewhere else. It's beyond third-parties now. It's entourages, you know what I mean? That third group is not just one person. It's a freakin' entourage. That group is bringing other things to the table that are influencing and impacting this young man. Kids deal with a lot. In this day and time, there is a lot of pressure, a lot more pressure for these young people. I don't know if I could have handled it, with all the media scrutiny, the social media, just the demands for interviews all the time. Not just pregame interviews but all the time. Then it starts at such an early age. Cover of Sports Illustrated? C'mon, man. YouTube highlight films of everybody. Everybody. You can Google up any player. Any high school player. But they don't realize what comes with that is the pressure, the expectations. Some people can handle it and some can't. There's nothing you can do. [When you lose a recruit because another school cheated], that's why you have 10 guys or five guys on the list at that position. You may not get them anyway. When that element does come involved, that's not necessarily with every kid, there's only a few guys with that potential, only a few in that position. That's why I was always against the one-year deal. Let them go. Let them go. It really doesn't do us any good to have them for a year. It doesn't do the kid as much good. We just become another place where the NBA can evaluate kids. Just let them go. Let them go out of junior high. Let them go when they can, just like they do with any other protégé."

Tubby's very lucid and succinct response was spot on. The NCAA or as I should have written, the NBA rule of, one year removed from high school and 19 years of age, is ridiculous. Let the athletes 18 and above decide their own futures. What makes the bb athletes any different? If they make it great and if they don't, well they can always find another job, hopefully!

Folks, it is NOT an NCAA rule. The rule as it now stands is a result of the NBA owners and Players union agreement. In order to change this "one and done rule" the NBA must act. NCAA cannot change it.

You are indeed correct!

The NCAA can make there own rule to counter the NBA making s player stay three years than that might make the NBA re think its stance. The one and done's can go abroad for a year and get a head start on getting cash and making it rain on the bitches. They'll be better prepared for the association lol

What rule can the NCAA make?? They can't go back in time and not offer a scholarship to someone who says they will stay and then leaves.

I always find it strange when people ask a question that they know the answer too AND know that the answer they will be given on the record will not be the truth. I'd bet big money most of of those guys have cheated (or been aware of cheating by their assistants or others associated with the program). It's especially hilarious that Calipari is quoted in this article with the whole Derrick Rose/ACT thing.

Getting a quote from Steve Fisher isn't much better. To be fair he may have been a Three Wise Monkeys type coach at Michigan but cheating was going when he was the head coach.

This is the preposterous statement of the year

Asking Calipari if he ever lost a recruit because of someone else cheating was kinda rich...lol

I would have liked the question to have been this: "Did any of your former players ever come to play for you because of something a booster game them?" I'm pretty sure most of them, including Tubby at Kentucky got some recruits because of what those crazy fans were willing to pay and entice recruits with.

Wow. A lot of tap-dancing around by coaches there. Can reasonably conclude the Massimino and Boeheim have cheated and didn't care one bit about doing so. Calipari's spin was like a classic politician's "say something without saying anything" approach. Pitino I'm not sure about. At least Tubby came forward and said it straight out that he's lost kids to cheaters.

All and all, it's reasonable to conclude that most of these guys have cheated in the past (and probably in the present) imo. The NCAA won't do a thing about it because they're all about protecting their sacred cows, which is why I always laugh when documentaries on recruiting practices always are careful to say it WAS dirty back in the day (all while implying that it's suddenly CLEAN now). Trust me on this, it's STILL dirty and it isn't going to get any cleaner anytime in the near future either.

Wow, thanks for the info. We learn something new about Tubby every day. If you are old enough to remember, UK fans were angry with Tubby because he could not get big-time players. Tubby does it in a right way. Three or four years before he got here, he had the best recruiting class in the country. That class was a bust. Crawford and Rondo did not like each other so they would not pass the ball to each other. Morris was too afraid of contacts and wanted to save his body for NBA. Bradly was the one who had a heart but he was like Chip, very out of control.

Do your homework 1st, next time you want to post anything here, . I see that you are a new poster here. Don't follow the crazy posters here who bash Tubby anytime they get a chance.

I'm starting to learn that not many people get along with Rondo. Which is odd for a pass first PG.

I've wonder that. How good of a coach, leader & teacher can he be with his poor communication skills. Sure he's got some charm, but you would swear english is his second language sometimes.

Report from my uncle, who winters in Austin, FWIW. He is a former AD at a MN high school and long time head football coach (again FWIW):

"I just got back from watching practice at the NCAA's in Austin. I saw Florida, UCLA, Northwestern State and your beloved Goofers practice. Here is my assessment: Florida athletic, UCLA weak inside game, Northwestern State athletic and quick good shooting guards and MN no chemistry between players and coach. Strong inside game should give UCLA trouble."

I have just been made aware that being good in Chemistry makes one a better basketball player. :banghead:

Your unlce is very samrt. He must be reading paper. This bold statement has been mentioned like 1000000000000000000000 during the past few weeks.

He must have used sign language to win all of those games.

That is an amazing assessment from just watching a practice. Tubby haters have a long arm.

Top end would be Hall of Fame.

Jesus Christ, you a$$holes, I qualified it with "FWIW." It wasn't an "assessment." It was simply an interesting observation (to me) from a disinterested party. He simply knows I *am* an interested party and was at their practice b/c he's interested in athletics in general.

Nobody hates Tubby. But some people seem to defend him at any costs.

Sheesh.

Would you ask your uncle if he can provide an example of the lack of chemistry between the players and coach! Is it a lack of a. diversity, b. Cohesiveness, c. Role taking, d. Leadership, e. Common vision? f. Does Tubby not make his players feel valued and exude enthusiasm and encouraging others. Does Tubby ramble on with incoherent instructions. What?

No, I won't. He's at the games right now.

No reason to get upset. Tell your samrt uncle that Tubby got screwed once by his mentor Nolan Richardson when UK was number one team in NCAA. Nolan attended the practice before the game and took notes. Then, he delivered them to his best friend and former assistant Anderson (the coach of UAB). After that year, Tubby has been very careful about letting people in during his practices. Your uncle might have seen the shoot-around practice that was open to public. During the practises like that, coaches don't walk around with their notpads.
