"Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips has to make a decision on the fate of coach Bill Carmody in the coming week. Carmody hasn't been able to get Northwestern in the NCAA tournament, but then no one has in Evanston. Carmody has had tremendously bad luck and is a well-respected coach for a reason. He has poured all his energy into trying to get the Wildcats into the NCAA tournament. Northwestern should be able to make a cameo every so often, like Stanford. The Wildcats are always going to be in a better position than most to earn quality wins due to the strength of the Big Ten, and probably just have to finish sixth to be in the chase for a bid. That will become more difficult with 14 teams, but still doable. If Northwestern were to go in another direction, I don't see how how Duke associate head coach Chris Collins, a native of the northern Chicago suburbs, doesn't get the first call. Carmody deserves a chance to state his case for what he has done to make the Wildcats competitive and what he can still achieve."

Go Gophers!!

Carmody should be let go. He has failed to get NU into the NCAA tournament even once. You can say what you want about NU having never been in, but if they are comfortable with never making the tournament, they might as well just drop basketball and see if they can get a team together to competein the new B1G hockey conference.

Carmody's got them closer, consistently, than anyone else had been able to. It would be taking a big risk to trade him for what's behind Door #3.

People said the exact same thing about Mason and the Gophers. Some nationally will probably say the same thing if we let go of Tubby.

When they said it about Mason it was true, and we were all pretty aware of the riskiness of the situation. Most recognized he was a good coach and got the most out of his players. I would say the same about Carmody. At least at this point in time, it would be hard to say our BB team is a well-coached outfit.

I understand that line of logic, but if I am a Northwestern fan, I am not comfortable with getting consistently close. I am a firm believer that the problem was not firing Mason, it was hiring Brewster. With Carmody and Mason, you can feel like you are getting a consistent level of performance, but in both cases, it is an unsatisfactory level and you don't feel like you are ever going to take the next step. I am willing to risk a higher that takes a step backwards to get a chance to have a hire who can take a step forwards.

Another interesting ideological question is what is more important to you as a fan? Having the highest ceiling or the best average performance? Would you prefer a coach who made the tournament every year for 10 years and sprinkled in a few first round wins and maybe a Sweet 16 or one who made a Final Four twice but missed the tournament 8 times? I don't think there is a right answer to that question, but your answer probably shapes your thoughts.

It's an interesting topic of conversation, somewhat because all the three situations had/have a facilities deficit. We still don't know what Mason would have achieved with the new football stadium. You can make an argument that facilities were the glass ceiling for him then. NU has sub-par facilities, and everyone knows about our own basketball facilities issues. Not to make excuses for any of the coaches in the conversation, but it is interesting that they share this common thread.

Bill Carmody is the sole topic that confuses me to death about Gopher fans.

We say things like, well don't fire Carmody they don't have a practice facility. It's not his fault! Well, you can't fire him. Northwestern has high academic standards and even though Duke and Stanford do just fine, Bill is a great guy. How could you talk about firing someone for not making the tournament when no one at Northwestern has? Well it's only year 13, he just needs more time.

But what about Tubby?

The Gophers have no practice facility? EXCUSES! Fire tubby! The Gophers haven't won a tourney game when no one has for 23 years? ENOUGH HISTORY! Fire Tubby. The Gophers have a big city campus, some recruits don't like that ... MORE EXCUSES! ACCEPTORS OF MEDIOCRITY! FIRE TUBBY!

It just boggles my mind.

Carmody and Mason are good comparison's. While Mason's peak was much higher, I also think the Northwestern basketball job is even tough than the Gopher football job. But it's not that difficult to make the NCAAs (as we are about to prove.) If this was only his 4th-5th year, I'd argue in his favor. But they've given him an awfully long time to jump over an awfully low bar. I'm not tuned into NW recruiting but it seemed like last year's team was the 'peak' and it might be downhill from here. If so, I'd probably pull the trigger.

Mike May would say "who do they think they are?' He'd be an idiot for saying it but he would anyway.

Northwestern is getting the results they paid for: $950,000

Minnesota is not getting the results they paid for: $2,200,000

So you'd be all in favor of keeping Tubby if he made $1 lets say? So you are okay with "accepting mediocrity" as long as its cheap?

I'd like to see what Carmody could do at a less academically strict power conference school. He seems like a very good coach, just can't get the athletes it takes.

Put Carmody at Wisconsin and Ryan at Northwestern and the records at each school would be pretty much the same as they are now. JMO

The only positive for Chris Collins would be his potential coaching genes he got from his father. I wouldn't touch a Duke assistant with a 10 foot pole. Mike Brey is the best of the group and he's had one Sweet Sixteen appearance in 8 trips to the tournament.

If I put it like this: Chris Collins, the son of 76ers coach Doug Collins.

Would that be better?

I think, at some point, NW has to move in a different direction, despite the difficulties of running that program and how close Carmody has gotten them a couple times. And I think they've reached that point after 13 years. It's time to pat Bill on the back, but tell him to kick rocks. And tell him to buy a tie.

I'm not sure it can get much worse than a .318 BT winning percentage.

UPDATE: Looks like Northwestern will be looking for a new head coach.

About time.

Chicago Tribune: Bill Carmody out as Northwestern basketball coach

Bill Carmody took Northwestern basketball from the depths of Division I to respectability. But given 13 chances, he could not take the Wildcats to the NCAA tournament. And ultimately that’s what led to a change Saturday, ending years of “should they or shouldn’t they” debate.

Carmody said after NU’s first-round loss in the Big Ten tournament to Iowa on Thursday night: “Everyone’s goal is to get to the NCAA tournament, and we haven’t been able to accomplish that. In 100 years (the Wildcats) haven’t been able to accomplish that.”

Duke associate head coach Chris Collins, Bucknell coach Dave Paulsen, Valparaiso’s Bryce Drew and Northern Iowa’s Ben Jacobson are among those expected to receive consideration from athletic director Jim Phillips.

Go Gophers!!

Unless Phillips has a top drawer candidate this is a very risky decision. NU's top recruit, 4 star ESPN100 point guard Jaren Sina has said he would reconsider his commitment to NU if Carmody is gone. NU was an abysmal BB team until Carmody arrived going winless in the B1G. Carmody got more out of his team than most coaches. He was hamstrung by poor facilities and difficulty recruiting because of high academic standards. And for the record Stanford, Vanderbilt, ND and Duke do not have as high as academic standards as NU.

Poor brainiacs.

I agree, there is always some type of hoofed animal behind door three.

Interesting year to pull the trigger on him after all the injuries. Next year could be the year and someone else will get all the credit.

Looks like we have another coach for our list of candidates.
