Southern California has targeted Florida Gulf Coast Coach Andy Enfield as its top candidate, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The deal is not completed, but Enfield and USC have held discussions and a deal is expected to be completed soon.

Enfield led FGCU to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament last week, a charmed run of fearless play that captured the nation for a week. Enfield became the biggest story in college basketball, as everything in his back story from his super model wife to his niche as a shooting specialist captivated America. The tournament appearance was the first ever for FGCU, who only began competing in Division I athletics in 2011. Enfield has amassed a 41-28 record at FGCU, including one Atlantic Sun Tournament championship in 2013.

Enfield came to FGCU from Florida State, where he served as an assistant to Leonard Hamilton, and also has significant experience as an NBA assistant coach.

He would replace Kevin O'Neill, who was fired after beginning the season 7-10. Long-time USC assistant Bob Cantu replaced O'Neill as the interim coach for the remainder of the season.

Who do we have left on our list.

We went through "highly coveted"
to "Not sure if he'd take it"
to "Would be a good fit"
to "I'd settle for..."
to "I don't want to settle for a one-year wonder"
to whoever is left.

And why should any of us be surprised?

Can't wait for Wojo to be announced sometime this week.

Let the begging begin.

Good hire for them, they will be fun to watch in a couple of years.

A part of me thought Dunk City at Williams Arena would be fun. Another part of me thought teams Michigan State, Ohio State, and Wisconsin wouldn't let Dunk City get off the ground.

12 hours ago this would have made me happy. Now that were linked to Steve freaking Wojkrzewski, I'm sad. Panic button officially pressed. We got rid of Tim Brewster as football coach and accidentally hired him as AD.

I think Enfield/USC is a great fit. I would have been a little worried about Enfield in the Big Ten, but in the Pac 12, he could flourish. It will be interesting to see if Enfield can beat out Alford for some of that So Cal talent.

Yes you got it right

Oh they'd let them get off the ground - its the landings that would suck.

Happy for Enfield but bitterly disappointed for us. Style is irrelevant; a good coach is a good coach.

I'm irked and borderline disgusted at how many people here don't think ANYONE is good enough for us. In a strange way that's part of the inferiority complex - to think we need a beyond perfect individual to make it work at Minnesota.

FGCU didn't win their conference regular season. FGCU lost to Lipscomb twice. Basically his team got hot for a couple of weeks.

Maybe he's a great coach, but I don't think beating Georgetown and SDSU proves it.

I predict that we will wish we had hired Enfield rather than whoever we end up with.

Probably, the one thing I know about being a Minnesota sports fan is disappointment. This is the sad truth about the majority of us, we hope for the best but expect the worst

The longer this takes the more and more I am thinking Gregg Marshall is the number one target. If he wasn't, that'd either mean we really have been turned down by everyone and we are scrambling or that Teague has someone and for whatever reason is waiting to announce it

And with every major job being filled, if he is truly interested we have only one competition for him. The school he is currently at. UCLA is filled. Northwestern is filled. USC is filled. Texas Tech is filled.

GW also alluded to their being potential reasons he may look at MN.

I think if Marshall ends up being the hire, NT deserves enourmous credit for how he handled this. I think it really would be chess vs. checkers at that point letting every position get filled, not panicking, and just waiting for his guy.

I'd compare it to the draft. Let's say your opinion is there are no all-star pickes outside of the top 2 (Shaka and Stevens). Guys 3-30 are all pretty similar in your eyes. Except for one. Only issue is, he won't come over from Europe for a year so teams shy away as they want a guy now.

NT may not care if he ends up with Stephens from MSU or Enfield as he views them as similar quality so he can gamble on Marshall coming over after the tournament run. He may, for whatever reason, be fairly certain of Marshall too. Who knows.

What that might indicate is that his team improved during the course of the year and peaked at the right time.

The loss to Maine is more embarrassing than losing to Lipscomb twice. ... UMaine has perhaps the least inspiring coach in the history of D-I basketball (Ted Woodward), yet they refuse to fire him!
