The president of Ohio State University said Notre Dame was never invited to join the Big Ten because the university's priests are not good partners, joking that "those damn Catholics" can't be trusted, according to a recording of a meeting he attended late last year.

At the December meeting of the school's athletic council, Gordon Gee also took shots at schools in the Southeastern Conference and the University of Louisville, according to the recording, obtained by The Associated Press under a public records request.

"The fathers are holy on Sunday, and they're holy hell on the rest of the week," Gee said to laughter at the Dec. 5 meeting attended by athletic director Gene Smith and several other athletic department members, along with professors and students.

"You just can't trust those damn Catholics on a Thursday or a Friday, and so, literally, I can say that," said Gee, a Mormon.

Now I'm interested what Gee had to say about Rutgers. Still don't get it.

This guy says some incredibly dumb things, but I don't know if what he said was terribly offensive. It seems to a tongue-in-cheek joke about dealing with Notre Dame (who happen to be Catholic). It's dumb but I think it's a bit overblown.

My politics are pretty much solidly left-of-center, but it seems no one can tell a joke anymore without getting taken to task by the language scrubbers. Problem for Gee is that he's been around long enough to know that what he said was going to be pounced upon by the media, which as Bob_Loblaw said, makes his comments really stupid.

Well said.

I'm Catholic and I thought it was hilarious.

Am I seeing things, or has our language from within this thread been "scrubbed?" All the funniest comments are gone.

I'll stand by what I typed. If EGG is not gone by the end of 2013 you win.

It was a stupid comment and he should be smart enough to know that in this day and age you can't say things like that even if you are joking because there are way to many people out there with no sense of humor just looking for a reason to get pissed off and go after someone.

Clearly he was just kidding around and is not anti-catholic but in todays world if you say it you must believe it and therefore be punished for it.

Dumb on both ends if you ask me. I'm Catholic and couldn't care less about this. Yet he should know better not to say things like that.

Note to prexy g of THE O.S.U. re: the bashing & stereotyping of religious icons...

institutions and members of religious persuasions...

What you say in a staff meeting in your role as president of a major university is very different than what you say sitting around a barbecue with your buddies and a beer (even though he doesn't know what that tastes like). ANYONE in public life knows that. It is not about a sense of humor or not, but what is appropriate. How he could have made it that far with his history of inappropriate comments is amazing.

See: Politician.

Given he pointed out his own Mormon faith, I suspect he and ND officials have some fun jousting back and forth...he just shared in the ADs meeting how they playfully go at it when discussing each other...some need to lighten up on this and let people have their fun before everyone get so bottled up they blow their stacks.

I think a few of you hit the nail right on the head. I don't believe that he has any real problems with people of the Catholic faith, but it is frightening that someone in that high and visible of a position could be dumb enough to not realize that someone would get offended and make a stink.

ESPN: Ohio State's Gordon Gee to retire

Ohio State University president Gordon Gee announced his retirement Tuesday after he came under fire for jokingly referring to "those damn Catholics" at Notre Dame and poking fun at the academic quality of other schools.

Ohio State initially called the remarks unacceptable and placed Gee on a "remediation plan" to improve his behavior.

Gee, 69, said in a statement he decided during a vacation last week that he would step down July 1.

"During my days away, I also spent some time in self-reflection," Gee said. "And after much deliberation, I have decided it is now time for me to turn over the reins of leadership to allow the seeds that we have planted to grow. It is also time for me to re-energize and refocus myself."
