"The proposed raise, if accepted, would more than double [his] salary and make Herman the highest-paid head coach at a Group of 5 school. That title is currently held by Cincinnati coach Tommy Tuberville, at $2.2 million a year."

It would also be more than double what the U is currently paying Tracy Claeys, against an athletics budget of $106 MM. Houston's athletic budget is around $40 MM. Crazy.

Straight "Oil" cash homey!

Wow, the differences in athletic budgets make that really crazy.

I believe Gordie Shaw is their O-line coach....

I think he still leaves, he's a really good coach who will be much in demand. He'll never win a title at Houston.

True, but expectations are a helluva lot lower in Houston than any of the big jobs he could be leaving for.

U of H also approved a $60 million facelift to their basketball facility. Add there new stadium and you have all the makings of a backroom deal that will include the Cougars joining the Big 12 sooner rather than later. Why else would Herman stay?

About to say, but if I had to guess there trying to get into the Big 12 and moves like this show a commitment to big time athletics. 3 Mill would put you at what 5th or 6th in the big ten in salary?

It's a nice gesture to show appreciation for the year that they have had, but it isn't likely to be enough to keep him if one of the big boys comes knocking. He'll still leave sooner or later, but this would give him a reason to stick around another year or two if he doesn't love any of the opportunities that come his way in the next 45 days.

Sadly you are probably right, he will be high on a lot of coaching lists this offseason and he will probably forgo a huge paycheck at Houston to make a run at one of the helmet school openings. He is winning with Levine's players (and an extremely soft schedule). He would be smart to take the money and stay put but coaches usually seem to have their sights set on bigger and better things so he will probably go.

UH is a far better fit for the Big 12 than West Virginia.....

I wonder how many sports programs Houston has compared to Minnesota. That could explain the $106M vs. $40M

23 ($4.6 MM per sport) vs. 17 ($2.4 MM per sport). Minnesota spends just under twice as much money per sport and somehow Houston can pay their head football coach more than twice as much as Minnesota's head football coach.

This isn't really a case of the U not being able to pay Claeys that kind of money, if the U wanted to give him a 3 million per year they could. Clearly Houston feels that the big boys are going to come and try to steal their coach away so they are doing everything they can to keep him around. I honestly don't think the U has those same concerns in regards to Claeys.

This is just them saying to their fans they tried to keep him. They're not even in negotiations. Supposedly he wants Texas job and it's a matter of when it opens.

Mostly agree with this. However, if the day comes when we either feel the need to desperately retain or replace Claeys, do we get to $3 million?
