CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina’s depth has taken a preseason hit at cornerback, with Lejond Cavazos out due to a lower-body injury that will require surgery.

Cavazos was leaning on crutches and not participating Tuesday at the Koman Practice Complex, as the Tar Heels held their sixth practice of training camp and worked out in full pads. Sources told Inside Carolina the junior Cavazos has suffered a right-knee meniscus injury.

He started UNC’s final three games of last season — the 2022 regular-season finale loss to NC State, the ACC championship game loss to Clemson, and the Holiday Bowl loss to Oregon — as incumbent cornerbacks Tony Grimes and Storm Duck receded toward eventually entering the NCAA transfer portal and the Tar Heels’ changing of the guard in the defensive backfield began to take shape.

Cavazos spent the first two seasons of his college career at Ohio State, before transferring to Carolina.
