UConn

2 year probation and 1 scholarship for major infractions? Doesn't really seem like enough to me. How likely is it that the NCAA will increase the punishment?

It's UConn, so not very likely, but they should. If it was the Gophers they'd probably ban us from postseason for about 3 years and take away 3 scholarships. Then again the U Admin would probably impose a penalty that harsh on itself.

She's a talented and just as importantly, fair, college basketball columnist. I think her take on UConn/Calhoun sounds about right.

The system stinks, but the games are great. When I read about smelly things like this, especially the university's complacency, it does make me grateful to have Tubby. We may lose a few recruting battles, but we still have our souls and a great coach. Could you imagine what our local media would have done to the U if Clem's transgressions had been glossed over like UConn is doing for Calhoun? Where is the press out there? The NCAA has a chance to show it cares about integrity and has some teeth with this one. If they let this "self imposed penalty" stand, they should be investigated.

This just in from the NCAA: they have labled the self-imposed penalties as "sufficient" for UCONN and gave the Death Penalty to Rutgers for good measure.

Contract Extension

Two interesting side bars -

Is this related to the medical problems Calhoun was having last year. Read some speculation the issue was stress related.

How does the timing of the contract extension compare to the NCAA investigation? Did UConn know an investigation was coming, before they extended Calhoun's contract? Did they speed up the negotiations to get the contract extension done before the story broke. May have had some trouble justifying the generous contract terms for a coach when the program has some significant compliance issues.
