He is very upset about his team not playing close to home, and talks about Tubby Smith among other things. He also thinks the Hollinses are both Lionel's kids.

Question to take away: Is Tony Parker going to play? (you'll get that answer about 100 times in the video)

OHHHHH poor baby. It's not like we are playing close to home. Holy Jesus Martha.

Right? 50 of the teams in the tournament aren't playing close to home. Get over it!

i think its great he knows nothing about our team our best player is trevor... to our advantage for sure if we take care of the ball we could win but the way we have been playing i dont think so.
hopefully emphasizes pushing the ball up the court most teams have figured out to keep us out of transition game.. we play best when we dont have to rely our awful half court offense

"They have Lionel Hollins' boys on their team, as their star players." Haha

Seems like an idiot. Bet he doesn't last much longer at UCLA.

He won the regular season title in the PAC ten and lost in the tournament final. I am sure he will do just fine.

You do realize a whole bunch UCLA fans want him fired right? And that the LA media is suggesting he needs a Sweet 16 berth to save his job?

Shocking that a coach at an elite program isn't up to speed on another program outside his conference that he didn't play during the year. Instead of watching game film of PAC-12 opponents during the season and recruiting, he should have been watching random games of the gophers.

What is Zygi Wilf doing at the interview running a cheap camera???

Dont see why he would speak so negatively like this. Only possible effect it could have would be to put his team into a negative mindset.

I guess he figured that the regular season champs would be given better treatment. I can't say I blame him. Meawhile Cal, an 11 seed, gets a virtual homegame. Arizona, a team they beat in the regular season and the post season gets Salt Lake City. I can totally understand his anger and confusion. Imagine How IU fans and Crean would feel if the regionals were in Chicago and someone like the Illini got to play there, while the Hoosiers were shipped down to Austin. The IU nation would be up in arms. Howland's got a pretty valid complaint. Might use it as a motivating factor: F U NCAA! It could work both ways.

If he doesn't know the facts. Why ramble on about Lionel Hollin's boys being the stars of the team? Make stuff up? And all the time spent on where there playing. Sure not an impressive speaker.

While he seemed kind of clueless in this interview I am guessing he will find some time between now and Friday night to watch a few games and figure some things out about the team. His sports info guy may have let him down in this situation but it is not like the team won't be prepared when the game rolls around. That being said still a very lucky first round draw for the Gophers all things considered.

I posted this in the other thread too, but Howland will be on the Herd in a matter of minutes. Colin has us beating UCLA too.

No one is saying he should have. But if you don't know much about a team, then say that. It's better than saying a bunch of things that are completely wrong.

The major knock on Howland hasn't been his X's and O's or coaching ability.

The SI article quotes (relating to Reeves Nelson) suggested that his biggest flaws are that he is very socially awkward which causes him to have difficulty relating to players, disciplining players, interviewing, etc.

Seems like a good coach, but he just has social difficulties.

Is it possible he's just looking for a motivational edge to put a chip on his players shoulders? They lost their point guard and then lost to Oregon in the PAC 12 tourney. I could see a coach looking for something to motivate his players. This could be one.

I just listened to an interview with Bob Knight. He said the first thing you do after finding out who you play is not to complain about your opposition or where your playing. He said it sends a bad message to your team. Found it interesting after hearing Howland's comments.

I can see his pre-game speech in the locker room now:

"OK, guys. We were supposed to play in San Jose but they slotted us in Austin, Texas which is B.S. Let's go!!! Let's show the Selection Committee that we shouldn't have had such a long flight!"

Go Gophers!!

"By the way, who are we playing again?"
