"Jerry Kill told Sports Headliners some of his position assistants were offered jobs with other programs during the off-season, including as defensive coordinators, but his staff remained intact when the Gophers opened spring football practice this week.

Kill didn’t identify the assistants who were offered jobs but did confirm that staff members have received salary increases since arriving here with the head coach in December of 2010. Sources indicate the Gophers’ salaries for assistants have moved up from near the bottom of the Big Ten to the middle.

“If you can keep the core group together then that’s a good thing,” Kill said. “Continuity has been a problem here at the University of Minnesota.”

Offensive and defensive coordinators sometimes changed annually under head coach Tim Brewster, Kill’s predecessor. Kill came to Minnesota with a reputation for holding his staff together at Northern Illinois and other schools where he’s coached. Defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys has been with him for 17 years.

Staff continuity is one of four factors Kill listed as imperative to making the Gophers a winning program. Other requirements are not losing players because of school work, having a successful strength program, and being given time by the administration to build the program.

“I think everyone wants our program to be at the top,” Kill said. “We gotta find a way to get it to the middle and then we’ve gotta go another step. We’ve got work to do but we’re certainly a heck of a lot farther along in knowing what we need than we were a year ago. So we just need to keep making progress.”

As Bleed would say; Go Gophers.

Excellent news that our compensation for assistants has increased. Keeping the band together is a good good thing.

This staff just keeps doing the things that need to happen for us to get back on top. Go Gophers!!!!!!

This might be the longest string of good news between gopher basketball and football I have ever experienced

One of Kil's greatest assets is ability to keep his staff together, really glad this is continuing. Just amazing that guys continue to turn down promotions, real testament to Kill.

Kill is great because he creates a consistent structure in the program. Having well-paid, knowledgeable assistants is just as important. Some day we might enjoy getting top-end recruits on a yearly basis. Until that day comes, we will have to make up for the talent gap by having every player and every coach know exactly what he is expected to do.

To that end, this news is as good as any I have heard this offseason!

I wasn't originally on board with the Kill hire, at least those first few weeks.

But continuity of staff is the NUMBER ONE reason that I became fully behind it before too long. For those clamoring for a big name coach like Belotti, what good is that if he's coming by himself? Sure, there's a chance he could put together a staff, stealing from other staffs, that could function and work well together. Kill's staff has stayed together.

Let's hope they stay together for the foreseeable future!!

Very good news! It has to be difficult for a team to form an identity and run a system with consistency in the coaching staff. The less turnover, the better.

This is great news. Many years ago it seem that an important consideration in hiring a head coach was whether they would bring along their staff. Today, it seems getting the big name coach is all that matters which I think can really backfire. I believe Coach Kill & Co. is going to be the difference in why we'll be a winner in the near future.

Go Gophers!

Agree with first part of your statement and partially with the 2nd part based on the words I read above. It was simply stated they were "offered" jobs. Being offered a job doesn't automatically qualify it as a promotion (maybe it was a lateral move? maybe it wasn't?). It depends on how one would define promotion - in title? in salary? in a bigger conference?

I don't think this is necessarily significant. Under Brewster, the Gophers lost defensive coordinators to North Carolina and Auburn, they also lost a WR coach to the Cleveland Browns. At least 2 of those 3 departures would be considered a step up (and the other one had Whithers going closer to home at UNC). I kind of doubt that anyone on Kill's staff had a comparable offer coming off the type of year the Gophers had. The last I looked Minnesota is paying this staff very well considering that only Miller has previous BCS experience.

Well some of them were offered "o" and "d" cordinator positions imo it means something.

Agreed. A coordinator position is no small deal, regardless of whether or not it is at a BCS school. If nothing else, turning down the positions shows that they think Kill's wagon is better than any other wagon they could hitch themselves to.

Who here thinks Bielema offered most of the jobs just to prove what a dick he is?

My man....only an idiot would take a coordinators position at a non BCS school that pays about the same as a position coach at a BCS school...which is what was offered. It's great that these guys have stayed together... But then done have REALLY been offered anything worth leaving for.

Why? Wouldn't it be important to a BCS school to have some coordinator experience previously when they want to hire a coordinator?

The significant part of this is that the staff is staying together not the quality of the jobs they were offered.

My man...that is 100% false. If that were true no BCS coordinator would ever go be a head coach at a non-BCS school that pays the same.

Who's talking about head coaching positions?

Look, it's great that the staff remained intact...but were you actually worried that they were going to be raided (lol)? You do know we didn't go to the rose bowl last season? Tell me they remained intact after the Gophers start winning and I will be impressed, until then all this is coach "framing" an argument to get his staff pay raises (which I have no problem with). Which proves he knows how to guild the Lilly when he wants.

My man... how do you know that is what was offered? That's right you don't. You don't think there are some decent paying coordinator jobs in Conference USA or the Mountain West Conference? I'm sure there are. Our position coaches get around $100-$140k to the best of my knowledge (Hammock was paid $125k in his last year and Steve Watson, a WR coach, was paid $108k in 2010). I'm sure Southern Miss, Boise State, TCU, and Houston paid their coordinators more than that last year. More pay and more responsibility... sounds like a promotion to me.

I'll bet Iowa State wasn't too worried about Gene Chizik being raided from them after he went 3-9 and 2-10 (and winless in the Big 12) in 2007 and 2008 (lol).

It's apples to apples. We are both talking about coaches advancing one step in the profession by taking a position (coordinator in your example, head coach in my example)with a lower level of prestige but with similar pay. Sometimes looking behind the next step is important when accepting a job. This is chess, it ain't checkers.

The rest of your argument has nothing to do with the original point you made in your previous post.

Also, What puts you in a position to determine whether or not an offer received by a current assistant coach is worthy of their acceptance?

Lighten up my man (term of affection not sarcasm). It's just one mans opinion based mostly on conjecture and limited facts or knowledge of the situation.... just like yours.

Now come and give me a big ole hug....really give me a hug! Fo real doe...I will rock yo world!;)

Do you need some privacy?-lol

I know it was Brewster's staff, but we did lose Withers, Roof, and Fisch before. Granted it's not all that big of a concern, but still a concern. Staff continuity has been a concern in Gopherland since Cal Stoll was canned.

-Continue group hug. ;-)
