Tubby's Assistant Coaches

Hey so I saw there was this big debate over who Mark Turgeon would hire as assistant coaches. I don't remember that talk when Tubby came to town. Does his staff have crazy connections like this new fleet of Turgeon assistants do? See the link below:

No they don't. The guy who was the most acclaimed in terms of connections was Vince Taylor who worked for Pitino and I also believe he was supposed to have some overseas connections. Here's his bio from GopherSports: http://www.gophersports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=8400&ATCLID=922403

Ron Jirsa has worked with Tubby for years (and been a head coach at Georgia and Marshall) and Saul is obviously Tubby's son.

I think we miss Jimmy Williams who was going to be on the staff. I think I was naive to how much pull the name "Tubby Smith" would have on the recruiting trail and I don't think I was alone in overestimating the allure of Tubby Smith. We simply have to recruit better and I don't hear anyone recruits saying they LOVE assistant coach X or that Minnesota has been recruiting them the hardest/longest. It seems like we do best with kids whose parents are very involved in their decision making process. Tubby does seem to make a very good impression on the parents.

Lionell Hollins has constantly said he had nothing to do with Austin's recruitment, he choose Tubby and Minnesota on his own.

However, I do agree with you on Jimmy Williams. I was too young to remember the scandal, so maybe I am slightly naive, but I would have liked to see him with a job here. I think it would have been a solid hire.
