per this tweet from Marcus:

"Tubby was pretty honest in the post-game interview when he said: "This is probably a game that probably does it in for us." Is he done?"

Go Gophers!!

My guess

is that he is referring to getting into the NCAA - and I have to agree - we are done. :(

I would be stunned if Tubby ever took another job.
He is getting of the age where he probably doesn't want to go and try to rebuild another program.

I fully expect Tubby to coach the Gophers until it is time for him to retire

It's been four years now and you're still following Tubby from the Kentucky messageboards. Isn't it time to let it go?

Only 1 path left - win B10T games on Mar 10-11-12-13.

Highly unlikely.

I don't think that is accurate. With how week the bubble is, going 8-10 in conference and then losing the B10T championship game would probably be enough to get in. Still highly unlikely though.

Good luck with that. You may be right but I'll be surprised.

This is my thinking too. I think to get to the championship you probably end up having to go through 1 or 2 more "quality" wins (i.e. Wisconsin, Purdue, OSU) which would help. I think 20 wins with our wins against top RPI teams would carry us.

That being said, without Nolen I think it's a done deal this year.

I would have to agree with him. It would take a miraculous run in the BTT to make the dance.

20 wins gets this team a shot IMO. 21 is a lock. The bubble is that bad.

But honestly I don't see them winning a game with the current roster. Tubby has done a heck of a job getting the team a chance in almost every game. Tubby hasn't been able to find anyone to step up late in games.

Can't make chicken soup out of chickenchit and that is exactly what hoffarber, maverick, iverson, and Hollins have been playing like at the end of games. Sampson has been inconsistent at the end. Chip hasn't played at the end. Williams has actually been playing well IMO. Mbakwe is almost 100% dependent on others for his offense (much like the whole team). Nobody wants the ball at the end. This team reminds me of a glen mason football team. Everybody is just waiting for somebody else to make the play.

I agree with 20 wins and in, especially considering how weak the bubble is this year, but I'm lacking the faith that we'd be able to pull it off at the current moment.

4 more wins. We need win the last 2 and 2 in the BTT. Sadly, that last one is likely to be OSU.

This is like the sanction-filled, loss of scholarships, loss of recruiting contacts/visits, constantly playing short-handed era. It's too tough to win Big Ten games when you just don't have enough guards to get it done. College ball is still about really great guard play.

Tubby probably isn't as bad a coach as his w/loss record in Big Ten play would indicate. Neither was a coach who was constantly ham-strung with all the sanctions/loss of scholarships/left-over scandal stuff a number of seasons ago.

Forget about the NCAA tourney stuff for this 2010/2011 season. It will probably be rebuilding time next season. Don't even talk bubble. The bubble popped a while ago. There were too many disruptions and not enough guards this season. a 6-10 Big Ten record on February 27th is good for about 8th or 9th place in the the Big Ten. That is a minus four in Big Ten play and that pretty much sums up this season. That is about how well our players have played and our coaches have coached. It always gets down to winning ENOUGH Big Ten games to finish in the top half of the conference. Those early season wins don't count for much at the end of February or during the month of March if you are not PLUS two or three in the Big Ten wins minus the Big Ten losses scheme of things. Those early season tournament wins really don't mean very much and all those other ooc wins before the first of the year are pretty meaningless and incredibly expensive for the fans to have to pay to see compared to their worth after the first of the year.

Tubby will coach here as long as he wants to coach here. However, he doesn't have enough leverage after this season to force a practice facility move and it just isn't credible to think that too many attractive programs are making too many offers that he just can't refuse.

Better luck to our Gopher Men's Hoopsters next year!

I think Tubby will coach 3 more years (remaining on his contract) at Minnesota.

But do you really think hiring decisions are made on 1 bad month over 3 good months in the same season?

Big Ten wins minus Big Ten losses provide the greatest indicator of how a Big Ten coach is doing compared to other Big Ten coaches, how the recruiting is, how the players are progressing and how they are playing. It is totally apples to apples and no coach or team can run...hide...or make excuses. The Big Ten record IS what the Big Ten record IS. Every team is playing every other team. In many cases...both home and away. There is NO better way to rank our team vs. every other team in the Big Ten. If you want, you can go back and rank Tubby's efforts for as long as he has been a coach in the Big Ten by looking at the final standings each year he has been a Big Ten Coach. Totals count. numbers of Big Ten games count. Obviously the wins help and the losses hurt...a lot. Big Ten wins vs. Big Ten losses gives us a very meaningful and all-telling picture of the total health of a Big Ten Program.

Every year is a new year. All teams have some injury problems or other problems to overcome. With as many games as there are in a Big Ten season plus the Big Ten tournament in Men's Hoops, the Big Ten Standings tell us ALL we need to know about any given season or any cumulative career statistics for coaches and for players. We KNOW how they have done in Big Ten play agaist all Big Ten competition on ALL Big Ten courts.

I don't care about the ooc competition. You can draw NO conclusions from the random match-ups. And, what do you learn about one and done appearances in some NCAA or NIT Tourney?

It's all about the Big Ten season and how our team compares to every other Big Ten team. The final standings will give us the ultimate comparison and ranking of how our team, our coach and our players are doing against other Big Ten teams, coaches and players. After all, we ARE a Big Ten team. The length of the season and the number of competitions make the Big Ten Standings the ultimate ranking tool. You can NOt argue with the truth that the final Big Ten Standings will show all of us who care about Golden Gopher Men's Basketball. There is no room for debate unless there is a tie...and then, there is always the head to head competition factor. What will be...will be.

Then you would have fired John Wooden at UCLA in the 1950's or Coach K at Duke in the mid 1980's. Neither set the world afire their first few years at those schools.

Then you would have fired John Wooden at UCLA in the 1950's or Coach K at Duke in the mid 1980's. Neither set the world afire their first few years at those schools.

Now there good bobo of tubby: WHERE did I say anything about anybody being fired?????????? What's the deal here???????? I NEVER mentioned anyone being fired or ANY jobs being lost. In fact, I said that Tubby will coach at Minnesota for as long as he wants to coach at Minnesota.

Tubby will be ranked as a Big Ten Coach by his record AS a Big Ten Coach. How could you rank him any other way. His base salary is 1.8 million per year. When you divide that salary by his total number of Big Ten wins each year, he IS being paid a huge amount of money per Big Ten win. The BARN is not selling out. He has got a very nice, comfortable gig here. And, as I stated, I believe he will be able to stay here as the Men's Hoops Coach for as long as he wants to stay here.

However, Tubby is not the ONLY Gopher Men's Hoops Coach to ever have to play just a bit short-handed. Just look at the burdon of playing with LESS scholarship players, less recruiting visits, NCAA sanctions and all that went with it that the coach who followed the haskin's induced scandal had live with.

So, Tubby doesn't have it so tough and he earns one HECK of a lot of money for each Big Ten win he puts up. In fact, Tubby has a lot of luxury compared to that dude who had to follow haskins.

It is only reasonable to rank the Big Ten coaches EACH YEAR according to their Big Ten wins minus their Big Ten losses. How else would you rank the Big Ten Coaches? It is a clean, honest and fair way to rank the Big Ten Coaches on EVERY aspect of what being a coach means.

Then, one can always look at the Big Ten wins minus Big Ten losses of every other coach who has coached at Minnesota to determine how that Minnesota coach compares to other Minnesota coaches in Big Ten play. You know how does Tubby compare to the historical records of Minnesota in Big Ten play. The Big Ten play portion of the schedule is the ONLY aspect that repeats itself and duplicates itself over and over, year after year...decade after decade.

And, as I told you bubba of tubby: I NEVER said ANYTHING about ANY coach being fired. Understand? Comprehend? Got that?????

Comparing Big Ten Coaches to one another can only be done in one way. What is the thing they all have in common? That's right, coaching against ALL the other Big Ten coaches and all the other Big Ten players and teams. Apples to apples... Taking a look at how they do against "directional state u..." tells you NOTHING.

The only way we can judge these guys is by gopherhole cage match wins vs gopherhole cage match losses.

We'll have to let FOT use statistics from gopherhole cage match contests to help his cause.

You silly little dudes and dudettes can carry on all you want now. Act silly...

I've said what I want to say about how Big Ten Coaches can be compared to one another. So, be my guest and show us all about your personal depth of character(s), conviction(s) and your personal moment(s) in the sun.

So, how do you think this Big Ten season is going so far? Just where would you rate/rank Tubby compared to the other Big Ten Coaches in this 2010/2011 season? Will Tubby really be courted by any other programs? Will he have the clout to force a promise/completion date of a new practice facility by the end of this season?

As for me, I'll just say that at this moment in time Tubby is the 8th or 9th best Coach in the Big Ten THIS season. His club is 6 wins and 10 losses or a minus 4 in Big Ten play. His job is totally secure. He seems to be a great person and he has developed a very nice reputation and resume, complete with a National Championship. He will be here as long as he wants to be here. There won't be a new practice facility announced this year. A contract extension? Pretty doubtful at this point in time with Prexy K coming on board and the new AD that he will bring with him still not even announced. In essence, the state has a 6 billion dollar deficit and the U of M will be very disappointed with what the state legislators and law-makers and guardians of the purse-strings will provide for them in the next decade or two. There will be no money for new ball parks OR practice facilities. The theme at the state house will need to be "cut, cut, cut AND tax, tax, tax" or NOTHING will work. That's my assessment of Tubby Smith and the very near-term future for the U of M Men's Hoops situation andthe financial outlook for the U of M on this last day of February, 2011.

It is very difficult to win big in the Big Ten. If need be, we can certainly review Tubby's entire Minnesota Big Ten tenure and compare his Big Ten success/failure rate with Minnesota Coaches of the past. But, only for a price:

It would cost you dudes and/or dudettes, which ever your cases may be a LOT of contribution money to GOPHERHOLE for me to take part in your silly cage match. IF $500.00 could be donated to the HOLE specifically dedicated to such a happening, I MIGHT consider. Othewise, just knock yourselves out being silly little dudes/dudettes, which ever your cases might be. Just let me know if it's worth it for you to start raising funds for GOPHERHOLE! I'm always open to helping out a good cause. Let's smile, relax and have some fun!!!!!!

I doubt Tubby would be willing go out a loser. I think his pride will dictate that he get this team on its feet before he leaves. Whether he can do that or not is a totally different question.
