"Gophers men's basketball coach Tubby Smith said Tuesday that juniors Trevor Mbakwe and Ralph Sampson III are waiting on responses from a scouting service that will project whether they would go in the first two rounds of June's NBA draft before they decide their future.

Mbakwe might not even be chosen in the second round, one NBA scout said, and there's no chance of Sampson being drafted. Therefore, both are expected to return to school for their senior seasons.

Meanwhile, Smith, whose contract runs through 2014, said he never was interested in the Missouri and North Carolina State coaching jobs that were recently filled. Nor, he said, was he contacted.

"I love it here," Smith said. "We can have something special here."

Smith reiterated that he's moving his charitable foundation from Kentucky to Minnesota and that he's planning a fundraising golf tournament at Edina Country Club in September. Some proceeds will go toward a practice facility to be built adjacent Williams Arena.

Smith has renderings for a new facility in his office in the Bierman Building."

Go Gophers!!

I like hearing his golf tourney will share proceeds for the practice facility. I think this shows a level of commitment I wasn't sure we had before with Tubby. I want to see this thing built.

Am I the only one surprised that RS3 thinks he is ready for the NBA?? Given his play this year, it looks foolish.

TM needs to know that just because you act like a NBA pro off the court, it doesn't translate to on the court skills.

People need to lay off of Ralph on this one. Spencer Tollackson did the same exact thing. I hope you ripped him for it too. Ralph is 10 times the player Tollackson was at this point in their careers.

I hope this lights 10 times the fire under his butt for next season, since it lit a pretty good fire under ST.

Ralph is 10 times the player Tollackson was at this point in their careers.

10 times? I know you were using hyperbole there and I agree RSIII is definitely better. But, Tollackson averaged 12 points and 5 rebounds his junior year. RSIII averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds. Neither guy's team made the postseason their junior years. Obviously, there are lots of variables at play in comparing the two, but both are relatively soft players with only adequate rebounding abilities for their size. Ralph's clearly a better defender/shot blocker, but when Tollackson was healthy, his offensive game was probably better than Ralph's or at least on par with it.

There is more to a game than stats? Was Spencer top 3 in the conference in blocks? Was he playing next to the big tens leading rebounder? Could he run up and down the court?

You are right it's hyperbole, but to say it's close speaks to the time passed since Spencer played. Spencer wasn't as good as his statline would indicate.

There's nothing wrong with asking for feedback from scouts.

This. People are looking far into RS3's actions I think. He wants to see where/how he can improve and try to position himself to have a shot next year.

Spencer and Dan both got ripped, as should Ralph for saying he thinks he's ready for the NBA.

10 times the player? yeah RS3 is a real superstar. The only part of his game that is ready for the NBA is that cute little dance he try's to pull-off when they introduce the starters.

Ralph is a much better player than tollackson. Obviously it was hyperbole to say 10 times the player. Maybe I should have said 1000 times so that you could have figured that out easier.

I can't remember people ripping Coleman or tollackson for doing this, but if they did and i saw it i would have defended them as well. Anyone who rips anyone for looking into something like this is just looking for something to rip. It's not a big deal at all.

It comes as a bit of a surprise, but the Gophers' 6-foot-11, 240-pound junior Ralph Sampson III hasn't ruled out the possibility of declaring himself eligible for June's NBA draft, depending on how the rest of the season goes, he said. Underclass college players are allowed to declare for the draft, then withdraw before the draft and retain college eligibility.

"I don't know yet; we'll see how the rest of this thing goes," Sampson said. "Hopefully, if I feel I'm ready. We'll see."

Sampson's father, 7-4 Ralph II, was the No. 1 pick in the 1983 NBA draft after playing four years at Virginia. Ralph III is a B student majoring in communications. He eventually wants to play in the NBA.

"You can say you're going to go into the draft, and they'll take a survey of a small sample of teams to judge where you're going to go, first or second round," Ralph III said. "With that information, you decide whether to go in the draft or stay in school."

_______________

I thought during a filmed interview Ralph said he was ready for the NBA. If he said that, he's rip-able IMO. It's smart to find out how close you are to getting drafted. He'll find out he's not even close.

Maybe now you can see the rest of the quote.

Maybe now you can see the rest of the quote.

That's the whole reason I found and posted the quote. IF Ralph said what I recalled from the filmed interview it's rip-able.

I don't blame him for seeing how close he is to making the draft, even though he's way off.

Ralph shouldn't even embarrass himself looking to be drafted. He has all the tools any NBA player needs to be successful. But he is lacking the most important element that is not a part of His God given talent-''Passion."

There's a chance Ralph doesn't have the "passion" or "heart" everyone talks about, but I think it's impossible for us to know that. Just because he doesn't scream and celebrate on the court doesn't mean he doesn't care. Body language can be deceiving. Take someone like Ricky Davis for example. He was very demonstrative on the court, but nobody really cared less about effort than him. Again, I don't know Ralph so I don't know his true inner passion or heart but to say he doesn't give his full effort is a tad reckless.

The only part of his game that is ready for the NBA is that cute little dance he try's to pull-off when they introduce the starters.

Not to get too far off topic... That fruity dance appears to be Ralph's favorite part of game day.
