Tubby praised Oto and EE on the 830 pregame, said they are what is missing from the team right now. Hope that's true. -Per MnHoops twitter.

I didn't hear the post game show... I believe Oto is that tall-athletic shooter this team needs. I have high hopes for Elliott too, maybe a physical center with some touch.

It's nice to hear Tubby praise their efforts in practice. Until I see him play I have no reason to believe he is any better than Abu-Shamala.

I think the future is pretty good for this team. They are really going to need the outside shooter, I hope Otto can fit that bill.

I see us having a strong year next season, it will not be rebuilding.

Yes, we will lose a very good passer/shooter in Hoffarber. We have already lost Nolen. Next year we gain Oto, Elliott, Joe, Mo and Andre. I expect all three (Rodney, Mbakwe, Ralph) or at least two of them back next season.

not rebuilding? the top 11 next year will include 3 marginal sophomores and 5 (including Mo) unknown freshmen.

joe and andre have played the top competition already. i dont think the learning curve will be that big for them. if you saw joe at pulley league, he dropped about 30 one game on Royce's/El Amin's team. looked so dominant for a junior in high school. He has a college ready body and game

scools12...The only guy they lose who is playing right now is Hoff. I expect Mbakwe to be back. Like i said, this team reminds me of the team the year before we went to the Final Four. We lost by about 20 to Tulane at the Barn that year in the NIT.

So we're losing our leading scorer and assist leader on a team that is 6-10 in the Big 10, and currently in 8th place, but somehow that's supposed to be the reason that we'll be better next year?

We'll actually have a point guard next year, that's why we'll be better.

who is this PG? a high SG who will be trying to make the transition to a D1 PG in the B10. he isn't a one and done type player.

Hoff is playing out of position. The reason he is leading the team in assists is because he is playing point guard for 30+ minutes a game. I hope he is leading the team in assists. Who else possibly could be leading the team in assists? I think Mbakwe will have a chance to be Big Ten player of the year next year. I expect Austin Hollins and Rodney Williams to show quite a bit of improvement. I expect both Sampson and Iverson will both be much better next year. I expect Andre Hollins will have a big role with the team next season. I expect Mav, Chip, Mo and Coleman will all contribute minutes next season. I wouldn't be surprised if the signed Welsh, the junior college guard they went to see last week. This year they have 8 players that they play, and Chip and Mav are two of them. They are both freshmen and will get better next year.

etho you expected a lot and assume a lot. if you are right a lot of things would have to fall correct for this program next year which is highly unlikely.

Hoff was dishing out the same amount of assists per game before Nolen went down.

Hoff was dissing out a ton of assists per game before Nolen went down.
Agreed. Hoffarber was actually averaging more assists than Nolen when he was playing his natural SG position. Thus, it wasn't just because he's at PG ethomas; he's been our leader in assists from Day 1 this year, with or without Nolen.

Nolen had more assists than Hoff did in the games they both played. If you want me to break it down for you game by game, I will. The point was, who else was going to get assists when Nolen went down besides Hoff.

Here is the game by game assists:

Wofford Hoff 6 Al 3 Hoff +3
Siena Hoff 7 Al 6 Hoff +4
WKU Hoff 9 Al 3 Hoff +10
NC Hoff 2 Al 4 Hoff +8
WV Hoff 1 Al 4 Hoff + 5
NDS hoff 4 Al 5 Hoff + 4
Wisc hoff 1 Al 2 Hoff + 3
MSU Hoff 3 Al 3 Hoff + 3
Ind Hoff 3 Al 4 Hoff + 2
OSU hoff 2 Al 6 Al + 2
Purdue Hoff4 Al 8 Al + 6
Iowa Hoff 4 Al 2 Al + 4

You can't purely look at stats, especially assists to determine the wealth of a point guard.

I find it hard to believe that a kid who can't make a huge impact this year (i.e. redshirt) is going to be much of a factor next year. Hopefully Eliot can prove me wrong.

Especially considering he will be playing behind Ralph, Mbawke (probably), and sharing time with Iverson.

The thought is that other teams are losing more talent than we are, that's why we will do better. I sure hope its true!

the reality is assuming everyone returns and everyone honors their commitment for next year the roster as it will be made up is now IMO 2 full years away from competing for a top 5 conference finish.

that would Tubby's 7 season. a lot more was expected by the 7th season. however the last 2 seasons have been filled with some breaks that have gone against them. if you want to believe at some point those things will even out the program may have been pushed back 2 years. give them a 2 season mulligan if you want and the program might be right where many thought it would be by year 7.

The thought is that they should be much quicker and more athletic. Rodney will be back to the small forward. Iverson will move back to coming off the bench. They will have all their bigs back, one of which has a good chance at being in the running for Big Ten player of the year. You don't think they have a decent chance at competing for the top 5 in the conference next year? You are freaking nuts!!!

Ugh...thanks for the memory. Went to that game with my sister and brother in-law who met each other while attending Tulane. Absolutely the worst defensive "effort" I've ever witnessed. And the quietest I've ever seen the barn, and I went to gymnastic meets there while in college. Heck...gymnasts are hot.

not only do I think they can't compete for a top 5 finish next year I don't think they can the year after that either. I must be 2X freaking nuts!!!

Next year will be better than the year after that. After next year they will lose Mbakwe, Sampson and Iverson. If you don't think they will be competing for the top 5 in the conference next year, you obviously don't think they will be competing for an NCAA tournament spot. Glad you don't have any expectations so I won't have to hear you complain after any losses next season.

I think I have stated my expectations for next year. Next year they will finish in the bottom half of the conference.

Right now I don't see how this team is top 5 in the Big Ten next year unless the PG position play improves dramatically. I don't think Andre Hollins will make that big of a difference at PG his freshman year. If they can get a Juco player at PG that really makes a difference then this team will be improved. Without that I think you are looking at 7-11 or 8-10.

Right now they have one guard on their team they can count on, and he is a shooting guard playing the point. Rodney goes back to the 3, Colton goes back to coming off the bench. That right there improves the athleticism and quickness they are currently lacking. I think they will sign this JUCO guard Welch who Tubby went to see last week. Sid was talking about him this morning so my guess is that he heard about him from someone connected to the program who he highly respects or he would not remember his name. The team isn't that far off right now. Andre Hollins, Austin Hollins, Coleman, Welch, a year old Mav and a year older Chip give them a much improved backcourt from what they are playing now, and that is not meant to be a slam on Hoff. They will just be a lot more athletic, much quicker and a lot deeper. I hope everyone remembers I was the one who told everyone they would be pretty good when next season rolls around.

PG is going to be the problem. Tubby has to find someone either within or without the team to fill this spot.

I think Walker and Eliason will be a better conbination than Sampson and Iverson have been. Oto and Halverson will improve the 3 spot.
