Tubby talked about the 6 Freshman. Sid asked about Mbakwe and Tubby (paraphrasing now) said they didn't have someone like Mbakwe coming off the bench last year. He should help a great deal this year. He followed that up by saying Sampson and Iverson ere playing great this year. Mona asked who would be the backup PG to Nolen this year. Tubby said prolly Devoe but that Ahanmisi was also playing very well.

I just thought it was interesting that the indication, to me at least, was that Mbakwe would be coming off the bench - at least to start the season.

.

Thanks for posting. I wonder if that means both Mbakwe and Devoe will be coming off the bench to start the season?

Al, Blake, RW, Sampson and Iverson?

As much as I hate to see our two best players coming off the bench, I love devoe and mbakwe against other teams 6-8 players. Also, just because they don't start, doesn't mean they wont get big minutes.

I think Devoe has earned the right to start over Nolen too. Nolen let the team down last year, and Devoe showed great leadership. We will see how it plays out though. I trust Tubby no matter what he decides. And in reality, as long as we get W's I don't care who plays.

Which is exactly what I said a few weeks ago...and most on here jumped on my comments. I said I bet Joseph will be coming off the bench, based on the starting lineups in Canada. Looks like that is the lineup Tubby is going with.

Devoe Joseph and Trevor Mbakwe are the two best players on the Gophers and they will be coming off the bench? That doesn't make any sense. I think it's important to get off to a fast start and with TM and DJ not in there to begin the game, it's going to be hard to do that.
I'm not a fan of Tubby's hockey-style substitutions. John Wooden never played more than 7-8 players and he had some pretty decent success ;) Look at Ohio State, they're not going to play more than 7 guys and they'll prolly win the conference. But I support the coach.

While listening this AM, I took his comment to mean that 'last year' he didn't have players like Mbakwe off the bench...but this is a new year. It's too bad that Dave Mona didn't ask that follow-up Q about starters at this point. Tubby probably would have deflected that anyway. If we could only be at the practices over the next couple of weeks we would then probably know what his starting lineup will be. Again it doesn't matter who starts early, but as the season goes on, I think it does.

Tubby said nothing this morning to indicate who would start. Don't get your undies in a bind.

Can you not read?
"Mona asked who would be the backup PG to Nolen this year. Tubby said prolly Devoe"

Although, theoretically, Devoe could start and still be used as Nolen's backup at PG. Rotating minutes amongst Devoe, Hoff, and Nolen could result (not saying it will) in Devoe starting at SG and still serving as the reserve PG.

Being a backup to Nolen at point guard does not preclude Joseph from starting at one of the other guard slots. Nolen gets a breather, Joseph shifts over, Nolen returns, while Joseph heads to the bench for a bit and someone like Hoff, Hollins, RW comes into the game. One example that readily comes to mind is the Illini team from a few years ago with Deron Williams and Dee Brown; both were starters and both could handle point guard responsibilities.

In '07, Mike Conley started at PG for OSU and Jamar Butler also started but was also the only backup PG. Starting at SG and also being the backup PG is very possible!

Feel free to apologize. My comment was directed to the poster who said, "I wonder if that means both Mbakwe and Devoe will be coming off the bench to start the season?"

No need to be a jerk, my young friend.

+1

I have no idea why this is such a difficult concept for some of our fans to grasp.

I can't see Mbakwe not starting, or at least not for very long into the season. Especially if he lives up to the hype. That said, we really started gelling as a team last season when Tubby started playing Colt and Ralph together, so maybe that's in the back of Tubby's mind. I haven't had any serious complaints with how Tubby substitutes and divides up the minutes, so I'm not too worried.

I would not be surprised at all to see the starting line-up change as the year progresses. It would not be surprising to see Tubby start some of his more experienced players early in the season and then reward players that "earn" the right to start during the early part of the season. Whether he starts (I suspect he will eventually) or not, Trevor will see a lot of floor time. I believe Trevor has a chance to be the best player on the team this season. I could also see the line-up change depending on the opponent (fast team, tall team, etc.). I am also in agreement that Joseph will see more back-up minutes at point guard than Maverick. It is good to hear that Maverick is progressing as he did not look like a contributor when I watched him play this past summer.

You might want to think that one through before you sound like a d-bag. Apparently the idea of Devoe starting at sg and shifting to pg never crossed your mind.

No offense, but I still have to jump at your comments on this situation. Tubby's comments don't even imply that Devoe won't be starting. That assumption would only make sense if Devoe were strictly a pg, but he's not. He'll likely shift to pg when Rodney comes in and Nolen comes out. Devoe will be logging heavy minutes and starting the majority of games (if not all, assuming he's not hurt).

early season

I really don't see how what Tubby says about who will, or will not start in the beginning of the saeson matters. he doesn't owe it to Sid or anyone else to say who will play where. Tubby is a master at not specifically answering a question anyway. Whomever plays best will play the most. That simple

I continue to be shocked by Tubby's love for Maverick. He's commented on a couple of occasions about how good he's looked in practice. Obviously he knows a lot more than me, and has seen a lot more than Maverick, but I just have never seen anything that would lead me to believe that the kid can help us this year.

Who knows how he really feels...

it does him no good to come out and say, well we are concerned about our backup point guard position and this Maverick kid just isn't Big Ten caliber. None of us have seen him in a real college basketball game, so let's just reserve judgement.

Summer ball = run and gun, when you get into the season there is structure...maybe Maverick is better suited to a structured game?

I did notice that the form on Maverick's shot during the tipoff event looked much improved from this past summer . Let's hope that Maverick continues to improve.

He May Be Improved

But I'd expect Nolen and Devoe to see the great majority of PT (35+ minutes) at PG in 2010-11.

You are right. I did give a jerk reaction to my own misreading. I appologize for any emotional distress my disrespectful question caused you.

19, the way lots of comments appear here, I think a lot of poster's undies are in perpetual bind.
