No desire to start the Royce White soap opera ( yet again ) but I caught this tweet from Marcus Fuller this morning-

Tubby said he hopes to use Royce White's scholarship to bring in another power forward type to bang inside.

Only wondering, if anyone knows, who we've offered or are recruiting that could fill this role?

This assumes, of course, that White will not be back ( again ) and Mbakwe will be here for two more years.

I saw that too. From what I saw when I watched him play, if Tubby signs Godfrey, it's a sign of desperation. He's a legit 6'7-6'8 is cut like Lebron was coming out of high school, but from what I saw he's got a ways to go. I saw a prospect who needs a lot of polish with the ball on the offensive side, although I was surprised to see a nice passing touch of the post. He might be a decent rebounder and can run the floor. He should have concentrated on football, he would be an intriguing DE prospect.

Is there a JUCO post, or someone going to jump onto the radar at the last moment? We could use an April surprise.

Aren't we looking at Al Horford's younger bro, Jon I think his name is. I think he's a 3star.

From what it seems like he is out of the question and a he is a heavy Michigan lean according to some on this board.

According to Marcus Fuller's last blog they are recruiting Michael Haynes a 6-6 power forward who is about 230-240 pounds. According the Marcus he is explosive at the rim.

Are they closing the door on Royce returning or is it simple logic that the odds of Trevor, Royce and Cory Joseph being on the team next year are so remote that they can afford to give one away for sure?

I don't think they're closing the door on anything, but Tubby would have to be stupid to not be looking for someone else to take that scholarship right now.

I agree. But it seems unlikely that they would know anything about Royce for sure until after they will have had to give his schoarship away. Therefore, I wonder if it's more a 'if we get Cory Joseph there won't be one left for Royce' scenerio. Basically, keeping one for Cory, giving it to Royce if Cory doesn't commit, or keeping for next year.

Or maybe Royce gets Trevor's scholarship if Trevor isn't available. If we don't sign Cory we need to find another pg.

They do need one. But who else is still available for 2010? It's a lot easier to find a JC power-forward who can provide some rebounding then a PG. If Nolen comes back we have the exact same PG situation we had this year, with Cobbs hopefully being better.

We don't know if Nolen will be back and if not we then have the same pg mess that we now have. Cobbs hasn't proven anything yet and if AN does come back it will be his last year.

The coaches need to find a PF for next year and they need to find another pg in case Cory J doesn't come our way. If we were to get Cory and a pf, and Trevor is back then Royce would be SOL.

Is there a decent pf or pg available. I don't know.

I don't think it's Tubby using Royce's scholly per se, it's more like Tubby knowing there may be more scholly's available next year anyway due to a transfer.

This is how it works. Coaches recruit more players than they have scholarships for.

Let's just say that the planets all come into alignment and Trevor is cleared, Royce comes back, Al gets his grades in order, Cory Joseph comes here, the Gophers sign a JUCO and nobody transfers. If that happens, somebody will be encouraged to continue their basketball career somewhere else.

But there are a lot of moving parts that have to line up for that to happen.

It will be an interesting off season as all of this unfolds. Except the JUCO part. I love Paul Carter but both he and Devron, and Devron has been a bust, took a year to get with the system. Unless a JUCO can make an immediate and permanent impact next year I'm hoping we don't sign one.

Very little choice Reserve, if it appears White and Mbakwe can't/won't play. If you look at the top 150 HS player lists- there's precious few uncommitted. Even fewer power forwards and they will be heavily sought. If even one of them can play for sure - then it might be tempting to bank the scholly.

If all that happens Minnesota will be squarely struck by an asteroid- bank on it.

Purely guessing here but,

I wouldn't be completely shocked if they just move on from Al Nolen and used up his scholarship. When you're essentially given a free education to play basketball and you can no longer play basketball.....well then you should no longer get a free education. Just my opinion.

What is the probability that Cory Joseph will be better in his first year than Cobbs in his second. I don't see how a point guard recruit is going to help next year anyway. I assume that the need is for two years from now assuming Nolen comes back for next year.

If they offer a scholership to someone and they accept, I would assume the last one goes to whoever signs first or is banked for the next year. Not a bad choice in my mind. If they do not get a point guard for next year then 2011 really becomes important.

98% is the probability. Sadly, the probability that Cory is in Minnesota next season is a different story.

Nope.. it's not an issue of who signs first. We could sign three guys this afternoon if we wanted to and figure out things later this year.

Minnesota should sign good players that can help the program. If they can talk to great players, they should continue to talk to them no matter what the scholarship situation is.

Do you know something that most people don't? Or what are you basing this off of? Not saying you're wrong, just curious.

Why? Do you think Tubby will hold a scholarship open for Royce indefinitely. I don't.

Doesn't Walker Lee Ashley still have a scholarship waiting along with Royce White and Seantrel Henderson?

I would guess that there are probably 3-5 available PG's that would be better than Cobbs, but that is just a guess.

I try not to chime in on recruiting, since I don't follow it like the mavens, but I'm a bit nervous. Unexpected loss of players at the end of the year can quickly bring down a program. Obviously, you're competing for fewer good players. Dealing with White, Nolen, and Mbwake, we possibly could have three to five more scholarships available if the transfer rumors prove true. If the worst case proves true, there's no way some of your recruiting isn't reactive. You're forced to take kids just to fill a spot; not because they're somebody who'll become a solid contributor.

Not to compare Tubby and Borton as coaches (although their results have been pretty similar the last three years) but that's what happened with the women's program after the mass exodus. There are still two women players on the team who got scholarships just to fill spots. One is a backup center who is adequate in that spot. Another hasn't contributed at all. There was a JC player taken two years ago who was a backup. Earlier, there was a Minnesota kid who was basically a walk-on although she did play some minutes for a year before blowing out a knee. They all seem like great people. but you're going to build much of a team with them.

This is just the obvious. It doesn't take into account the damage when other schools use this type of situation to downgrade your program. You can sell opportunity, but the road just gets a lot steeper.
