Go Gophers!!

Tubby got there at halftime and sat with Spencer Tollackson. Here is what I posted on the Badger board about last night's game:

"I attended the Chaska/Apple Valley game this evening at Chaska HS, which involved a few of the best prospects in Minnesota . Chaska ended up knocking off Apple Valley 78-75 in a pretty entertaining game. Sloppy at times in the first half, but some big shots made down the stretch in a tight game.

There were four kids on the floor who will probably play D1 hoops at some level. Thomas Shalk ( Apple Valley ) and Jake White (Chaska) are 2011 forwards who will likely play at the low- to mid-major level. Both are very productive players (Shalk had 25 tonight and White had 19) at the HS level, but I am not sure they have enough potential to be high major guys. The other two guys have both been looked at by UW, among others, and should end up playing at BCS schools.

Chaska has 2011 forward Ross Travis, who visited Madison with Jake White for a game recently. I have also heard that Coach Gard has visited Chaska HS a few times this winter. Travis is a 6’6” or 7” small forward who does a little bit of everything on the floor. He is a pretty well-built kid, definitely looking the part of a D1 college basketball player. However, he has missed a number of games this season with a back issue, which was apparently a problem for him during the most recent AAU season as well. Not sure what sort of effect that will have on his recruitment or potential as a college player, but back issues can certainly be very problematic. In tonight’s game, he did very little in the first half, oftentimes moving like someone with a bad back. In the second half, he really came alive and had a major impact on the game. He made both of his FTs in the first half, but then made 7 of 9 shots and scored 14 second half points to help Chaska rally for the win. The hoops came on a few mid-range jumpers, a couple nice drives to the bucket and two big dunks. I have read that he is a very good athlete, and he looked like one when he got in the open court on a couple occasions. As I noted, whatever the back issue is still appears to be giving him trouble. He definitely has the physical tools, but he also has a pretty good skill set. He shooting mechanics looked solid. He handles the ball well, even playing some point forward tonight, and made a couple very nice passes. I don’t know where Travis stands on UW’s priority list, but I hope they keep recruiting him. They obviously like Mycheal Henry and Markus Crider better, but if they miss on those two, Travis could turn out to be a very nice SF if he can keep himself healthy.

The other high major prospect is Apple Valley 8th grade PG Tyus Jones. Jones is about 6’1” and little thin, but that is certainly expected given his age. He is not one of those kids who is physically mature by junior high, he has a lot of maturing to do yet, which is a bit scary. He has pretty big feet and very long arms, so I would guess that he will get a bit taller yet. As he matures, I would also assume that he will get stronger and more explosive. As it is now, if you did not know he was an 8th grader, you would never guess it watching him on the court. He is very smooth and poised, despite some chipiness from a couple Chaska players, and knows exactly what he is doing on the court. It is pretty obvious that he has played a lot of basketball growing up, because he plays very smart and just knows how to play PG. He took a couple chances on risky passes that resulted in turnovers, but he had close to double digit assists and a number of those “one step ahead” kind of passes. His shot at this point is essentially a set shot, but he has decent form and can make shots. I wouldn’t describe him as super quick, but he is quick enough that he got into the lane quite a bit in this game. He had trouble finishing though, which I would attribute to a lack of strength. As he matures and gets stronger, he will be really, really tough to deal with. Coach Gard attended an Apple Valley game a couple days before UW played in Minneapolis last month, and Tubby Smith has been to 5 or 6 games (including tonight). I think it’s fair to say that he will have lots of offers very soon."
