And the newcomer of the year.

-------

Before he ever enrolled in college, Jared Sullinger led his AAU basketball squad to a national championship. He helped bring a state title and a No. 1 national ranking to Columbus’ Northland High School – and now he wants to spruce up the trophy case at Ohio State.

“He’s won at every level,” said Satch Sullinger, Jared’s father. “He won’t feel like he’s done his job unless the same thing happens at Ohio State.”

The Final Four is still a month away, but no one would be shocked to see the Buckeyes cutting down the nets in Houston. If it happens it will largely be because of Sullinger, who was being hailed as a national player of the year candidate just a month into his college career.

More From Jason KingQ-and-A with Rick Stansbury Feb 28, 2011 Yahoo! Sports’ All-ACC Team Feb 27, 2011 AdChoices

Freshman Jared Sullinger averages 17.4 points and 9.8 rebounds for Ohio State.

A freshman, Sullinger averages 17.4 points and 9.8 rebounds for the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes, who are 27-2 overall and 14-2 in the Big Ten. For his efforts, Sullinger has been selected as Yahoo! Sports’ Big Ten Player of the Year.

“Honestly,” Ohio State coach Thad Matta said, “there isn’t a whole lot Jared can’t do.”

Also earning accolades for a successful 2010-11 season is Purdue’s Matt Painter, who has been chosen as Yahoo! Sports’ Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Purdue (24-5 and 13-3) is ranked eighth in the country despite losing standout forward Robbie Hummel to a season-ending knee injury during the team’s first practice on Oct. 16. Purdue owns victories over a pair of top 10 teams in Ohio State and Wisconsin. None of it would’ve happened without Painter, whose Boilermakers pride themselves on defense and sharing the ball – a true sign that they’re led by an elite coach.

After making the Sweet 16 last season, Purdue fans have reason to set their expectations even higher this spring.

Here are the rest of Yahoo! Sports 2010-11 All-ACC honorees along with a list of award winners.

They obviously decided if you win player of the year you cannot win freshman of the year or newcomer since Sullinger should have won all of them. Or is newcomer just for transfer players? Mwabke deserves both the accolades he got. I am guessing he will get the same when the official Big Ten awards are given out.

I do think Johnson and Sullinger should be closer in Big Ten POY races than people have them.

I think Johnson has passed Sullinger as the Big Ten Player of the Year. Tough call, but I'd go with Johnson.

Johnson would be my choice as well.

I agree because Johnson (along with Moore) have carried that team. I know Jackson is solid as well but when you compare what Johnson is surrounded with the Sullinger - Buford, Lighty, Craft, Diebler - it is not close. That team lost Hummel and is still going to get a 2 seed. That is very impressive. One of only a few teams in the Big Ten who has exceeded expectations

jj...I would say that Iowa beating MSU by 20 also exceeded expectations. :)

I agree on the Johnson for POY call, he's been incredible for Purdue this year.

Wow, I'm surprised that you're all saying what I came in here to say. JJ is the Big Ten POY. The media has their head so far up Sully's ass that they'll never see it, though.

I'd also give him DPOY. Go ahead and tell me that Lighty has ever affected a game defensively like JJ did against MSU Sunday.

I think that the first team is spot on, though.

I'd take JJ over Sullinger

Anyone think Hoff has a chance at third team? Or am I dreaming?

If he didn't have to play PG for most of conference play I think he could have even made a run at 2nd team, but having to play pg really killed any chance he had at making an all conference team.

Congrats to Trevor, He deserves the accolades.

RE: conference player of the year, JJ or Sullinger, you really can't go wrong with either pick, as both have been fantastic players this season. However, contrary to most in this thread, my personal preference for that award would probably be Sullinger, because what he's done as a true freshman is just really mind-boggling, I mean talk about a highly skilled and extremely impressive young player. JJ is a senior, so you'd expect him to be good, but what Sully has been able to do as a freshman is on a whole different level in my opinion. He's just .2 of a rebound from averaging a double double for the season and leads JJ by a wide margin in total rebounding. He's also got a much higher FG% than does JJ (.558-.502), and he's also registered more assists and steals than Johnson and has the better assist-turnover ratio.

I realize there's a natural backlash against him because he gets talked about a lot, but Sullinger has been worth every bit of the talk this season in my opinion, and for that reason he would be my conference player of the year. It's really close though. Like I say, both have had great seasons and JJ has had a great career for the Boilers.

The fact that Sullinger is a freshman is irrelevant. They have an award for that.

You also failed to mention that JaJuan scores 3 more per game and blocks 2 more per game.

Well, I'm not about to argue about it. It's just my opinion, and you're welcome to yours.

And nobody's mentioned that this Yahoo! "award" is premature because one of the key factors (when there's a close race) is who wins the conference. There are still two conference games yet to play, POY usually goes to the best player on the best team, and no one has won the Big Ten yet. If OSU wins the Big Ten outright, usually the "to the victor goes the spoils" factor comes into play when it's a close call.

Yeah, but they gotta put theirs out there before it gets washed out in the ocean of award lists. It is pretty dumb.

Mbakwe was named to the 2nd team by both the coaches and the media.
