After winning the Grey Cup last year. Is in only his third year as a head coach at age 54. I say this because his name is bound to come up now...

This is why he doesn't stay longer then 2 years at most jobs. :)

I'm wary of placing to much weight for any candidate on their 2010 record. We need qualified individuals (Dungy, ect.) reviewing and interviewing these candidates for their ability to coach and build loyal and competent staffs. Its tough, do we rule out Sumlin because his team isn't playing so well or because Golden has two loses already? Gene Chizik has been fairly impressive at Auburn thus far and everyone knows his record was less than stellar at ISU.

Silvio, how do you know that?

The fact that Trestman wouldn't even be in the discussion of candidates if we were the University of "Any other state besides Minnesota" should be a red flag.

I have no opinion on Trestman but his team is currently 10-4 and looks very much like the favorite to win the Grey Cup again.

Trestman's Montreal Alouettes are 10-4 and in first place in their division.

Dungy doesn't have any special qualifications for reviewing head coach candidates. If he were hired as coach, he would bring a great PR boost

did you just make his record up hoping no one would check? trestman is 10-4 and on the verge of a deep playof run again.

Could be or it could be the combination of right coach and right job (think Pete Carroll to USC). This is why the U needs to put together an experienced and competent hiring committee.

Tony Dungy is 100% qualified to review head coaching candidates, end of discussion.

Did you really just make that comparison. Pete Carroll 33-31 as an NFL head coach before taking the USC job. It isn't the combination of right coach and right job.

Let's play the record game then, Gene Chizik 5-19 at Iowa State. We don't know the outcome of this one yet but Derek Dooley 17-20 at Louisiana Tech.

You are just making your original comparison seem more absurd with every post. I assume you are trying to compare that to his record and the fact that he was hired at Auburn. Two years shows that he can coach talent and recruit a Stellar JUCO Talent. It doesn't show that he can recruit successfully in a "program" sense.

+1 billion.

If Treastman is so great, he would have had a head college job (in the U.S.!) looong ago.

Treastman would do nothing for me.

Explain. Apparently at our price point you foresee a killshot hire, let's hear it.

First off what is our price point? Second, if it is the same as we are paying for Brewster and his staff then it will be a higher risk hire, not a killshot. I believe if the financial constraints are similar to what they were to hire Brewster and with our low rank in BCS conference that a historical look would show that the best hire would be an OC/DC from a National power who would be a first time head coach. I don't have a name. I don't have to have a name, that job is for someone else.

If your qualification list for a coach starts with his ties to the state then keep on movin'.

Josh087 makes one of the better points in the history of Gopherhole.

I watched an interview with Trestman and he's not exactly and inspiring personality. Plus who give rats a$$ if he's found some success in the CFL after two decades of less than mediocre performance as a nfl assistant. josh087 is right, this guys name comes up no where outside of that football hotbed Montreal. Same goes for Hohensee. Geez Us Cripes, will people get there heads screwed on straight. Remember what happened the last time we hired a former gopher as coach?

I'd rather have Cory Sauter than Marc Trestman. Bob Sansevere, who knows less about Gopher sports than any columnist in town (and that's really saying something) has been pushing Trestman since the USD game. That should tell you something.

Holly balls kiss of death.

If Dungy is put in charge of finding a replacement for the Gophers, I wouldn't be surprised if he included Leslie Frazier on his short list. Dungy has said a number of times that he thinks Frazier should be a head coach. Of course, that was referencing NFL. No idea if Frazier's coaching would translate to college - or if Frazier has the interest.
But, if he did, might not be a bad move for Frazier - jump ship from the Vikings after this year, the Vikings will likely be letting a lot of veterans go and will begin a rebuilding phase.

Oops, I must have misread the Montreal site page! 10-4 it is, but it's still only the third season. Apologies.

Has Frazier ever or can he recruit? I would guess that Frazier is someone like Tomlin who has no interest in coaching in college. If this is true then Dungy would be terrible as he recommends names that sound great, but are not real viable candidates.

Frazier was a college head coach...I believe DII...but still has been a head coach and recruited.

Hard to say how he would do recruiting at this level - or if he would have any interest in college coaching at all. Maybe he could convince Dungy to hire on for a year as a "consultant" to do recruiting and get things up and running. And maybe I'm talking out of my a** - just wishful thinking, I suppose. :)

Then again, how much would it hurt having a head coach who focuses on coaching and leaves most of the recruiting to others? Is this an ideal situation? No. But it may be a good start to get things headed back in the right direction.
