Transfer Portal

thats the scary part of it all....losing 92% of your scoring to graduation....
losing 30% of your scoring alone from your best player in Garcia
best player coming back in Asuma whos had 5 games in double figures, but 15 games where he scored 5 points or less
do any of Asuma, Frank, Betts transfer?

Scholorship players for next year
PG-Asuma
SG-Shinholster, Ross
SF-Betts
PF-Grove,
C-Frank, Jefferson

7 scholorship players on roster....and starting next year they can have 15 scholorship players?

only needs to find a high end stud at the wing
Plus a high end stud at the 4 spot
plus a high end Guard
plus another solid guard
Plus another solid wing
plus another solid 4
are any of those 3 recruits coming in going to be guys you can count on year 1? Maybe jefferson?
does Cochran get another year to fill some depth at the guard spot?

so many questions when it comes to the roster for next year.....

Looks like Ben will be staying…….gotta hit the portal hard as we lose a lot!!! Gotta go finds some bigs
Still think we likely have a new coach next year but regardless of who is in charge they are going to have to hit the portal hard to rebuild basically the entire roster.

I think Johnson is much closer to being renewed right now than any of us could have imagined 6 weeks ago. If this team goes 3-2 in its final 5 games (a real possibility), they finish 17-14 with a 9-11 conference record (by the way, that's the same regular season conference record that Pitino had in 2019 when they went to the NCAA tournament). If they win a game or two in the Big Ten tournament, they'd likely get into either the NIT or the Las Vegas tournament. From there, 20 or more wins when it's all said and done certainly is possible.

There are 5 regular season games left and the season still could take a sour turn. This is what happened to last year's team. They were sitting at 17-9 with five games left but proceeded to lose 4 of their last 5 regular season games and then lost their opening game in the Big Ten tournament (to Michigan State as usual). At this point, I do have a bit more confidence in this year's team than I had in last year's team at the end of the season. That team seemed to run out of gas at this point of the season. We'll see if this one does but I do think our last five regular season games are a bit easier than they were last season.

I keep forgetting about Cochran. I would bet he is healthy and ready to go but decided to just sit the year since its basically lost. Would bet he would be back next year. If Ben is gone, I would think he would hit the portal.

We will need a scorer, a big wing. Does Robison or Freitag transfer back from Wisconsin? Need to find a productive big that can shoot.

Let's just assume for the moment that Johnson returns, the players with eligibility return, and all three freshmen commits come aboard. That group would be pretty young on the whole. We've certainly had our struggles this season but in the latter part of the season, Johnson's strategy of "going old" seems to be vindicated so far. I would guess that the remaining recruiting targets would be upper class transfers. I can't see going after two freshmen who have combined for a total of 36 minutes this season. It's not like those freshmen were Top 100 players.

Knee jerk reaction. I think at minimum, he needs to get us back to the NIT. And that's being generous as most of us were saying NCAA or bust this year.

Could be the Las Vegas tournament featuring mainly Big Ten, Big East, and Big 12 teams. That tournament is sponsored by Fox Sports and supposedly teams from those conferences who don't get picked for the NCAA tournament must go there if they are picked (maybe part of a contractual arrangement). I think I remember reading somewhere that this tournament may also pay the players so I'm sure the players would prefer that over the NIT.

I never said "NCAA tournament or bust!" this season because Johnson can't control the selection and deserving teams are always left out. I said that he needs to do noticeably better than last season (including post-season games). For most of the season, I didn't think that was possible but there is more of a chance now.

I believe the "Crown" will be taking the top two non-NCAA teams from each power conference, so that means anyone above .500 in the Power 5 will likely get an NIT bid, especially once a bunch turn it down.

Coyle said it was his expectation and one NCAA in four years should be a bare minimum. Ben can't control the selection committee but he made this bed when he made the non-conference schedule.
