Gopher FB Coach Tracy Claeys appeared on the Sports Huddle with Sid and Dave on Sunday, July 3rd.

Sid: any impressions of what the players are doing?
TC:first half of summer conditioning went well. excited about offensive line, with changes we've made. just got a 4-day break, crank up again on Tuesday.

Dave: credibility on (40) times on high school kids?
TC: some kids hire personal trainers, rank pretty good coming out of HS. majority do not do that. you can improve athletic ability, make guys a little faster. a lot of times are over-rated. all we're concerned is that the kid can run. don't look for a specific 40 time (for certain positions). there are special ones who do have an extra gear. - If you can run below 4.7 or better, you can help on special teams.

Sid: are you recruiting now?
TC: finishing up dead period. give kids a break. next week, recruiting will crank up again as far as 2017 class. get to season, you also start to look toward 2018 class.

Sid: recruiting in MN going good?
TC: the more successful we get to be - goes back to commitment from Kaler and Regents to build practice facility. commitment to compete at high level in B1G. we continue to win more ball games, we'll continue to keep the kids in MN who can be B1G players.

Dave: make any offers to kids from camps?
TC: MN doesn't have spring ball like south - need to get them in camp. we've offered kids who came to camp and showed they can compete at high level. don't think as many this year as last year. watch kids for 2018 class - I have a hard time offering a kid until he plays a few games his Junior year. we've identified a few kids in that class to follow.

Sid: good crop of kids this year (in MN) ?
TC: don't think it'll be a big class - round 17 or 18. got to be a little picky. had a good spring - in on some good kids who can help us - now it's a matter of finishing.
we like commitments - no more visits to other schools.

DAve: ever got a highlight reel on kid you've never heard of?
TC: we have found a couple kids like that. we always go back and work through the HS coach. a lot of times, they haven't taken an ACT - borderline on grades - get a film late in the year. 1st thing pick up phone and call HS coach.

Sid: added anyone who will be eligible this fall?
TC: added a JUCO OL - got some academics to finish up. he will be a 3-for-3 kid. we do a lot of work on background checks, eligibility. someone else has paid to redshirt him. help depth on OL. if he finishes up academics, he'll join us for fall practice.

Sid: Oregon State 1st game. are you scouting them?
TC: we went back - went through a lot of film with Coach Anderson - ideas of what he tried to do when he was at WI. AT other places, been more of a 1-back spread type of thing. he's had change of staff. we did preliminary scouting report on anybody on the schedule who's changed coordinators or coaches. take a look in 1st 14 practices of fall camp, get back to them later in year.

Sid: Anderson was at WI. does that help (prepare)?
TC: no question, having competed against him. have to build in any changes.

------Related note: at about 9:40, Sid had short taped interview with Mitch Leidner.
Gist of conversation: Leidner talked about off-season conditioning. running captain's practices twice a week - watches film with WR's, then does on field practice - sometimes just offense - sometimes working against defense. said everyone is running and lifting just about every day.
Leidner said he feels good- doing all workouts. talked about the foot problems- said last year, had pain in left foot every time he tried to plant or cut - said it was manageable, but got worse at the end of the year. said this year is 1st time in two years he's been pain-free. (warning to wait!what?) - Mitch said he feels faster this year!

Thanks SON!

BJ Autry?

No, this is the Greene kid that picked us over Missouri. He still has work to do.

You have to graduate from JUCO or have been a full qualifier to avoid sitting a year. I checked the school ratings for Marietta GA where Greene is from, two of the lowest rated high schools in the school district, are in or just outside of Marietta. Knowing that he still needs to graduate and the school rating it's highly likely that some of his early classes were remedial and didn't count towards graduation.

Holy speculation batman!

Nice work SON - thanks a bunch for picking this up.

Thank you, SON. How is the heart?

Doing OK. Finished my cardiac rehab at the local hospital, but I'm trying to exercise 5 days a week if possible, and sticking to the low-fat, low-sodium diet. I've lost almost 15 pounds since May 10th. Still on a lot of medication for the immediate future.

Thanks SON!

So Greene is the third JUCO lineman signed this year. They now have 17 OL on roster. 2 FR, 5 RSFR, 1 SO, 3 RS SO, 3 JR, 2 RS JR, 1 RS SR. Based on that, would the Gophers even be in the market for Autry?

Autry is probably out at this point.
