I put this together yesterday and I guess I've decided to post it just to show people where successful coaches tend to come from. Obviously each program has its own set of obstacles, but I enjoy looking for trends.
Where coaches were prior to their current job as an AP Top 25 coach:
1. Nick Saban, Alabama: Head Coach, Miami Dolpins.
2. Jim Tressel, Ohio State: Head Coach, Youngstown State
3. Chris Petersen, Boise State: Offensive Coordinator, Boise State
4. Gary Patterson, TCU: Defensive Coordinator, TCU
5. Chip Kelly, Oregon: Offensive Coordinator, Oregon
6. Mack Brown, Texas: Head Coach, North Carolina.
7. Bob Stoops, Oklahoma: Defensive Coordinator, Florida.
8. Bo Pelini, Nebraska: Defensive Coordinator, LSU
9. Kirk Ferentz, Iowa: Offensive Line Coach Baltimore Ravens
10. Urban Meyer, Florida: Head Coach, Utah
11. Bret Bielema, Wisconsin: Defensive Coordinator, Wisconsin
12. Bobby Petrino, Arkansas: Head Coach, Atlanta Falcons
13. Steve Spurrier, Florida: Head Coach, Washington Redskins
14. Kyle Whittingham, Utah: Defensive Coordinator, Utah
15. Les Miles, LSU: Head Coach, Oklahoma State
16. Gene Chizik, Auburn: Head Coach, Iowa State
17. Randy Shannon, Miami: Defensive Coordinator, Miami
18. Lane Kiffin, USC: Head Coach, Tennessee
19. Jim Harbaugh, Stanford: Head Coach, San Diego
20. Rich Rodriguez, Michigan: Head Coach, West Virginia
21. Bill Stewart, West Virginia: Associate Head Coach, West Virginia
22. Joe Paterno, Penn State: Beginning of time.
23. Kevin Sumlin, Houston: co-Offensive Coordinator, Oklahoma
24. Mike Stoops, Arizona: Assistant, Oklahoma
25. Mike Riley, Oregon State: Head Coach, San Diego Chargers/OC USC
Trends:
4 former NFL head coaches. All three had success at the college level before failing in The League. Mike Riley has done a Grover Cleveland at Oregon State. For his first stint, he came from USC where he was offensive coordinator.
6 coaches were hired directly from their head coaching jobs at another FBS school, all of which would arguably be considered “moving on up.”
7 coordinators were hired from within. With the exception of Randy Shannon at Miami, all of these hires were made after the former coach left on their own accord (retirement, taking another job.)
2 head coaches from non-FBS teams. Tressel was dominant at Youngstown State, Jim Harbaugh put together a fantastic record at San Diego.
4 were hired from coordinator jobs at BCS powerhouse programs.
1 was an NFL position coach.
