per Pat:

7-Bobby Bell and Carl Eller. Magnificent Gophers together in 1961 and 1962. Only Eller makes this “dynamic tandem’’ list twice.

9-Laurence Maroney and Marion Barber III. In 2003 and 2004, the Gophers were the first teammates to rush for over 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons in Division I history.

Weber-Decker should be there.

Go Gophers!!

So Gopher puck only can muster an honorable mention from Patrick?

Banham-Wagner inspire a ranking of great Minnesota sports tandems

Rachel Banham returned from knee surgery to play basketball for the Gophers as a fifth-year senior this winter. This teamed her with sophomore Carlie Wagner, creating Minnesota’s own version of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.

This Banham-Wagner pairing inspired this list of fabulous sports tandems with a high profile that we have had in Minnesota. I went back to 1960 and chose this ranking:

1-Harmon Killebrew and Tony Oliva. Termed “KO Punch’’ by St. Paul writer Arno Goethel. Were in the Twins lineup together from 1964 to 1974.

2-Kirby Puckett and Kent Hrbek. “Kirby and Herbie.’’ Starred together for the Twins from 1984 to 1994.

3-Randy Moss and Cris Carter. Four amazing seasons [1998-2001] as Vikings receivers.

4-Alan Page and Carl Eller. With Jim Marshall for company, the two Hall of Famers created havoc on Vikings defensive line for a decade starting in 1967.

5-Lindsay Whalen and Janel McCarville. Took Gophers women’s basketball from oblivion to the Final Four in three seasons together [2001-04].

6-Neal Broten and Dino Ciccarelli. North Stars and regular linemates from the Stanley Cup run in 1981 to 1989.

7-Bobby Bell and Carl Eller. Magnificent Gophers together in 1961 and 1962. Only Eller makes this “dynamic tandem’’ list twice.

8-Lou Hudson and Archie Clark. Gophers basketball greats from 1963 to 1966. The senior season was hindered when Hudson broke his dominant hand (right) and used his left hand to shoot.

9-Laurence Maroney and Marion Barber III. In 2003 and 2004, the Gophers were the first teammates to rush for over 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons in Division I history.

10-Tom Mulso and Jeff McCarron. You couldn’t mention one without other. As a nod to prep sports, I’m putting the duo that led small-town Sherburn to the last one-class state basketball title in 1970 in the Top Ten.

Honorable mention: Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau (Twins). Ron Yary, Ed White (Vikings). Sandy Stephens, Bill Munsey (Gophers football). Kevin Garnett, Wally Szczerbiak (Timberwolves). Trent Tucker, Darryl Mitchell (Gophers hoops). Greg Eslinger, Mark Setterstrom (Gophers football). Jordan Leopold, Paul Martin (Gophers hockey). Bill Brown, Dave Osborn (Vikings).

PLUS THREE FROM PATRICK

Current Minnesota tandems with a chance to become legendary:

*Andrew Wiggins, Karl Anthony-Towns. The Wolves cannot possibly have this coupling of talent turn into a mess (as did Garnett-Steph Marbury). Can they?

*Miguel Sano, Byron Buxton. Once Buxton adjusts to big-league pitching (and it will happen for the Twins this summer), watch out.

*Anthony Barr, Eric Kendricks. Terrific Vikings assets in this age of building NFL defenses with amazing athletes at linebacker.

I don't care what you think of Weber. If you tell me that Decker would have flourished with someone other than Weber throwing to him you're out of your mind.

Weber made Decker?

ED7 may be the best WR that has ever played here. Pretty sure he would have flourished with many folks who post on this board playing QB.

I'm simply saying who else did the Gophers have at QB that would have given Decker stats that would come close to comparing to 08 and the first 7 games of 09. Maciejowski? Mortenson? Gray? With Brewsters swiss cheese OL? Seriously? We're talking the best 20 game stretch statistically for a Gophers receiver ever. And Decker was hobbled or out for parts of those two seasons.

I'm not calling Weber the best passing QB in Gopher history, but he's in the top-10. There are plenty of QBs in Gophers history that wouldn't have had nearly the impact on Decker. Those two had a rhythm going unlike any QB-WR tandem.

This list is pretty terrible. Eller/Page has to be #1 (both HOF), Carter/Moss (both HOF as soon as Moss is eligible) #2, and the rest of the list is mostly a great player paired with a good or above average one. Of course, he has to get his stupid self-serving random HS pairing that no one's ever heard of on the list. And Decker/Weber? Thanks, I needed the laugh this morning.

I think its hard to put Moss/CC above Hrbek/Kirby since the latter won two World Series, in spite of Hrbek not being a HOFer.

We've had so little success in this town - winning two World Series in 5 years is incredible and those two were the backbone of the franchise. There are quite a few HOF combos that have come through this town if that is the only criteria: Doleman/Randle, McDaniel/Zimmerman, Tarkenton/Tingelhoff, Killebrew/Carew.

Isn't this where someone throws in Weber's total yardage and TD stats and compares them to some QB who only played 2-years?

That "rhythm unlike any QB-WR tandem" could otherwise be described as Decker's ability to catch almost anything regardless of how well (or poorly) the pass was thrown.

Considering Weber rarely was able to set and throw, it was remarkable he could get the ball close enough for Decker. Again, do you think Decker would have near the success with anyone but Weber throwing the ball to him? IMO no.

Yes I do. With virtually anyone throwing him the ball.

So with Maciejowski, Mortenson, and/or Gray throwing the ball to him, he would have had around 135 rec. for over 1800 yards over 20 games? Umm...OK

Maybe more. Weber wasn't very good - I would say average to below average. Sorry to break it to you.

Is it a Adam thing?

You and I saw very different things when Weber and Decker played together.

Adam Weber is the Adam Hauser of Gopher football. Hauser, who had a save percentage above .900(IIRC), and was instrumental in the Gopher hockey team winning the National Title in 2002. Inspite of this Adam Hauser was never respected. Like Hauser, Weber gets no love. Don't get it, but that seems to be the case.

The sad thing is if Weber had went to another school and thrived, he would have been ripped to shreds for leaving town.

Good analogy.

Umm, Killebrew and Carew are both in the HOF, Moss and Carter will be, Page and Eller cannot be mentioned without Marshall.

Some people conveniently forget that Weber played in the pros for several years after having four offensive coordinators in five years. Kid had skills, had the potential to be even greater on a non-Brewster squad with an offensive line. And before anyone chimes in about having only been on the practice squad, how many college qbs end up getting a paycheck in the pros statistically, practice squad or not? I'd say Weber was above average with a ton of potential that was never tapped.

Potential? I'm not debating that as there is no way to measure. Also not interested in excuses. His performance was below average, IMO. You are welcome to disagree.

However, comparing how he was under appreciated to a GK who won a national title is very silly. Weber achieved just short of that in his Gopher career.

A history lesson for the fat a$$ from Fulda. 1928 saw two time All American Herb "The Owatonna Thunderbolt" Joesting and a Sophomore All American Bronco Nagurski lead the Gophers to the Big 10 Title. How can this pair not be not on his list.

The Owatonna Thunderbolt.
I must say I enjoy your historical references Husker. Thanks.

It's a two way street. QB & WR have to work together. If Leidner, who much like Weber, is under appreciated by Gopher fans was throwing to Decker he would have put up similar numbers. Heck, Leidner made KJ Maye a 70 catch receiver this past fall. I don't think if is fair to compare Mortenson or Maciejowski throwing the ball to Decker because they were back-ups. If Leidner, Gray, Cupito, etc were throwing to Decker he would put up similar stats to what he had.

Only on Gopher hole can 3 of the top 10 (really 9 because he threw in #10 for fun) duos be Gopher duos and Pat Ruesse be blasted. Heck, he named Whalen/McCarville the 5th best duo all-time in Minnesota history!

The article says he went back to 1960, presumably so he was evaluating people he actually saw.

Dangnabit Dpo. How many times have I told you to be factual? Dr.Don and I both have heard of Sherburn, Mulso and McCarron. :cool02:

Ok - no one whose age can be measured in two digits has heard of them. :)

Juslt wanted to add. I grew up in this town f Sherburn. My father drove the school, buses for many of years but I lost him in 1982. But this was a major Hoosie" moment, or those don't understand, read some history books. HEAD. I Love Gopher Football!hp
