Tony Nelson will be back next year.

As others have said, it made absolutely no sense why he wasn't playing more. Marshall was a bust
There had to be a reason because if they believed Nelson was a better option then Marshall earlier in the year they would have started him. You would definitely play a homegrown player with eligibility left over a guy who you just brought in and who only has 1 year left.

Water under the bridge now though. He earned a starting spot by the end of the season and is great that he is coming back for another season with the maroon and gold.

I'm afraid a "reason" might look like "we have to give the transfer the first shot at the job and a long, long leash, because I want to make sure the reputation of Minnesota is that it is friendly to transfers".

But my imagination might be off the rails there, I hope

There have been plenty of transfers that didn't work out or get much playing time.

The reality is we will never know for sure what led to the decision to start Marshall over Nelson for a good chunk of the year but I just come back to the idea that you are going to start the homegrown guy who you have multiple years invested into over a one year transfer, if you believe he is the best option.

Hindsight being 20/20 they may have made the wrong decision but we will never know all the factors that led into them making that decision.

Solid analysis.

The jury may also be out on if Callahan can coach OL outside of the RPO-zone scheme.
