Is there a chance in hell he would ever come back to coach the gophers. This is not intended to rip Brewster but Tony Dungy is a world class coach and from everything i've read and heard is a world class man.

Everyone knows Tony's great...but in my view, the U's chips are on Brew unless the wheels come off catastrophically and GN goes into a meltdown funk.

I wish! I remember he was asked about a rumor that he was interested in the job after Mase was fired, and he seemed stunned that such a rumor could even exsist. I think he said something like, "Well I went to school there so maybe somebody brought it up, but I have no interest in coaching in college."

No chance.

Too bad!

maybe his Minnesota allegiance doesn't run very deep. Would of thought with his rehabilitation role with Vick that he might see being a college coach as a satisfying direction. He will be a head coach again somewhere I'm sure.

Or maybe he doesn't want to be a college coach because he wouldn't enjoy some aspect of the college game (recruiting being a major difference between college/pro coaching gigs)?

I'm not that sure. He doesn't seem to be built like other coaches, and he puts a lot of importance on being around for his family, being a positive force in the world, etc.

That said, if he were to come back to coaching, I could see where college might have an appeal for him (what with the chance to mentor kids, and have a greater say in discipline/personal guidance, etc). I'm a big fan of what Brewster is doing, but I'd welcome Dungy with open arms. Unfortunately, there's no reason to believe it would ever happen.

I'd like to see him come back as a Student/Program Adviser of sorts. He could work with the student athletes in all areas. His connections and respect in the professional ranks also might make his addition to the Athletic Department as a key factor in a recruit's decision to come here. Especially for those that think they have to go to one of the Top 10 programs in their respective sports in order to be noticed or pushed to excel.

If Tony Dungy had any interest in coaching here I would fire Brew in a heartbeat. Tony Dungy would bring more excitement and presence than Tubby Smith brought to this town. I mean lets be realistic. Dungy is a former Gopher football alumni, a former nfl player, a former defensive backs coach with the gophers, 25+ years in the NFL as a d coordinator and a coach, an overall record of 140-69, and 2 Superbowl rings! He has an extreme passion for MN sports and I honestly want Tony Dungy to coach this team.

If he came back to coaching it would be for love of coaching period. Money and prestige would play no role. He also would want to be a coach and not a recruiter/coach. I see him more of a local christian school coach, like a St. Johns ot St. Thomas type of retired/coach. Probably inner city where he can make the most difference.

People really need to let this one go. He's not going to come here. He's not going to coach college.
He's probably never going to coach again. He's an alum, one we can be proud of, but its incredibly stupid to just float this out there like there's any chance of it happening.

Yeah, Dungy made a video touting the stadium wearing a MN shirt...cuz his ties to the school are shallow.
Jeez, you guys who want Brew out after the badger loss are the same ones who would be chanting 'BCS bowl baby!'.

Just adopt the attitude of Cubs, Pre 95 Packer fans and the Maple Leafs fans. Some day!

Tony would not have to work too hard on recriuting. They would come to him. This guy is solid in every aspect of coaching and as a man. Every parent in america would want there kid to play for Tony. This would be bigger then Tubby. This program would be elite in no time. I've thought about Tony coming here but I just don't think he would. But he would be helping young men learn and grow into mature men.

Again I was not ripping Brew, I also was not floating rumors, just asking a simple question since i haven't been on the website before. Seems as if people on this board are very sensitive and defensive, hopefully mods can delete the post all together.
Have a pleasant day folks!

He was already asked once when they fired Wacker and he said that he wanted to coach in the pros. He will not get back into coaching.

The community is quite large, when you post you are posting to hundreds of people. You'll get all kinds of responses. Many are college kids who lack tact, many are older who just failed to develop any like myself. You'll need a thicker skin and the ability to ignore or laugh at idiots to enjoy any site such as this. All in all, its worth it and a fun experience once you learn to navigate the masses.

Where he was after the 1996 season is a bit different than where he would be in 2011 or 2012 or 2015.

Mac Boston and the Treasurer of the University sat in Dungy's living room and offered him a contract to Coach the Gophers the year before Wacker's last year. There was plenty of speculation as to why he turned it down; much of it centered on the fact that both he and Wacker were strong members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Dungy didn't want it to look like he was forcing Wacker out of a job.

Dungy himself said he was never offered a contract. When we asked the Treasurer about that he retorted "well if putting a contract on the table in front of him isn't offering him a contract then no, we didn't offer him".

He told us that Dungy said he wanted to stay in the pros. He didn't want to have his career based upon the decisions of 17 and 18 year olds. That sentiment was echoed a few years ago by Flip wasn't it?

Who knows how he'd feel about things now. A lot of things have happened in his life. I hope that Brewster makes the speculation seem superfluous.

LOL...Dungy is not going to be coaching college football.......

You'll see a Black Pres...oh wait.......

If i'm not way off, he was consulted by Maturi through the most recent hire of Brewster. The dream being Flip and Dungy for the two open positions. Look, Dungy is very happy being a role model Christian motivational speaking type. His family is in Florida. As much as it would rule he's never coming here to coach.

yeah maybe a school with downtrodden kids from the hood like st.johns or st.thomas:D

Maybe ---

Joel Maturi has stated that in 3 or 4 years he probably will be retiring.

Now a notable sports figure and MN alum should be considered. What a positive thing that would be......

nothing but thugs there.

I was alluding to a school size and christian affiliation such as those two. But in a area that has more need. very funny though. I actually attended St. Thomas for a short while, great school.

I'd prefer someone with experience running an athletic department.
