We will not have the Ed Hightower crew working tonight game. Ed Hightower is working Michigan and Nebraska.

That's really the only thing I needed to know about the officiating crew--whether or not we have Ed or not. Though that reffing crew from the Northwestern game is starting to bug me quite a bit now. The small mousy looking grey-haired guy. The MSU crew we had was solid though.

I did NOT ref that game!!!

Don't be suprise if Ed Hightower is in Bloomington on Sat for Minnesota and Indiana.

I was wondering about this. How does the Big 10 assign officials? Do coaches have any idea who is working the game before they appear on the court?

The Refs are independent contractors who work with various conferences and are assigned games by the conference's coordinator of officials

We got TV Teddy instead. He loves Home Cookin' as much as Hightower.

I think they called a good game.

Now we wait for the regression to the mean on Saturday.

Not because the Gophers won, but the officials were solid all night. They missed an obvious call when Joe got fouled going strong to the rim in the first half, but other than that it was a game where you really didn't notice them, and that's always a good thing.

Very well officiated game...they let the kids play, and the best team won.

I thought after a rough start to the game, the officials were fine. I was scratching my head at the very beginning though. First a blocked shot on a Coleman jumper bounces out of bounds and is given to the Illini...then the charge on Brandon Paul on Mbakwe, but they counted the hoop (???). The Illini came out extremely physical, and I thought it might get out of control, but after the first 5 or 6 minutes it calmed down a bit, and it turned out to be an amazing win!!

I honestly think that the powers that be in the BIG will take two points away from Illinois tomorrow and publicly announce that a mistake was made. You can't allow referee's literally making up rules to go unchecked

I thought the refs were favoring the Gophers a little bit tonight.

I thought the refs did fine for us aside from the Coleman foul where he got smacked in the face and the phantom two points.

I can't comment on how they did for Illinois as I am biased.

I honestly thought that we got calls tonight that we would never see if we were not the "it" team right now. Funny what a bit of success can do.

"then the charge on Brandon Paul on Mbakwe, but they counted the hoop (???)"

I agree, terrible call. It was either a block with a chance for a three point play or a charge. The Ref can't count the basket unless the ball has been shot before there is contact. Since the shot was a dunk, that is impossible. Illinois could have been called for about 6 moving screens in the opening 10 minutes and none were called (except on Elliott). The Ref's did improve after the first 10 minutes.

A few on the Illinois boards would agree with you. Although, most of their comments were that the better team won and they desperately need an inside game / PF.

I was happy with the refs - so the Gophers probably did get a couple of calls.

Probably true - when's the last time you saw the Gophers not get the shaft by the refs in a Big Ten road game. A trip to the Kohl Center is coming up soo, where Bo Ryan will ensure the refs get it back in their heads that games are not to be called fairly.

You talking about for the Illinois game? TV Teddy was not working that one.

He was working the Michigan State game, maybe that's what you meant.

Does anyone know what the official call was on that play? I was thinking the exact same thing as I watched it. If Paul had shot a floater over Trevor, releasing before contact, I could see the charge while counting the basket. But how on earth do you call a charge and count the basket on a dunk?!
