per Tom Powers:

When it comes to doing his job, Jerry Kill's commitment and work ethic have never been questioned. But the qualification for the University of Minnesota football coach always has been "health permitting."

The boundaries of that caveat have been tested this season. Surely there had to come a point where Kill or athletics director Norwood Teague or President Eric Kaler or somebody declared: Enough is enough. As it turned out, that point was reached on Thursday when it was announced that Kill would be stepping back from the program to focus on his health.

Officially, the decision was attributed to Kill. But who knows? The main thing is that somebody made the right call for all concerned. There is a difference between being supportive and being reckless. Kill's health is the priority here.

Kill probably has more support, more people rooting for him, than any other Minnesota coach at any level. But he needs to stay safe, too. There are no easy solutions, but the status quo was not acceptable, regardless of the fact that he's become a symbol, a public face, for a health issue. This isn't about setting an example or striking a blow for a cause. It's about an ailing man trying to regain his health.
