per Powers:
Tubby pretends he doesn't hear the rumors and that he doesn't care what people say, anyway. Howland, whose athletic director will cross the street if he sees him coming, has been feeling the stress. He often refers questions about his future to Dan Guerrero, the AD. The numbers appear to confirm that he, too, has done a pretty good job.
But public opinion already has turned very much against him. And before that awful first half was over, his players were so frustrated that they were pointing fingers and jawing at each other instead of concentrating on the Gophers. They went into the locker room trailing by 10 points, 35-25, and Howland had to be contemplating a career in telemarketing.
And as the Gophers kept pounding away in the second half, Howland no doubt knew his 10-year run with the Bruins was over. All that's left is the official announcement. But I'll bet the two halftime pep talks were really something as both coaches worked to gain a reluctant promise of employment for at least one more game.
That fake hug is important. When coaches have been left dangling so long, even false affection is better than nothing.
