per Powers:

After years of humiliation in rivalry contests, the Gophers now have possession of Floyd of Rosedale -- a result of Saturday's lopsided victory over Iowa -- and the Little Brown Jug. They also remain in possession of the Governor's Victory Bell by virtue of their victory over Penn State last season. All that remains is Paul Bunyan's Axe.

"This is really big for the state of Minnesota," quarterback Mitch Leidner said.

Does anyone actually likes Powers writing? Can't just compliment the team without adding snide commentary.

Well, it was pretty humiliating when Iowa fans tear down the goal posts in our own stadium or they beat us 50 something to nothing. That's why it felt so good today.

We've won 3 of the last 5 vs. Iowa. Does that really deserve the line "After years of humiliation"?

Um... In the last 10 games in each Rivalry game:
Axe: 0/10
Jug: 2/10 (1/10 if you take out this season)
Floyd: 4/10 (3/10 if you take out this season)
Bell: 5/10

Aside from the Bell the I would call that "humiliating"... actually I would call that "very humiliating"...

On a feel good morning, that few minutes spent reading Powers' story was a mistake.

When was the last time we had possession of all 4 at the same time?

Thanks for info - wow, didn't realise that - I know the Governor's Bell is a comparatively recent trophy (70's?). What about us possessing all the other 3 at the same time?

It started in the early 90's when penn state joined the big ten.

The last time we had "the big 3" was 1967 although I think I saw a thread disputing that and saying it was more recent but I think that person may have been mistaken. Either way I wasn't alive so I will be getting my picture taken with all three when we win the axe.

Thanks again for all info guys- didn't fully realise how historically significant this season could turn out.

Really hope we do it, love the images circulating of Coach Kill on Floyd waving the jug in the air. So want to see the axe in the other hand!

I think the traditions for the trophy games are fantastic - but it made me feel sick seeing the Badgers cutting our posts down last year.

I have to see Tommy O doing his jig in the end zone while Cedric Thompson, Cobb, Wells and all the other seniors chop theirs down this year. IMHO, everyone connected with this magical Gopher season deserves to see that happen!

When that happens, Woody better be ready for the the throng of pilgrims descending on TCF to have their pictures taken with the four trophies. This will be an historic moment!

Admission fees? To build practice facilities

I would pay a VERY large fee for a picture of the team with all 4 or some kind of collage with the team carrying off each trophy after the game or something of the like. They could make x number of the prints and sell them for $100 each and I would buy a couple, one for me and a couple for presents.

Ditto for me. You should send this to marketing or the Gopher Gridiron twitter or something.

Hmmmm.. I don't tweeter or whatever the kids call it. If they get the Axe I definitely will be asking the gophers about this some how though

We had all three for two weeks in 1978. We won the Axe and Jug in 1977, followed by the Pig in 1978. Two weeks after bringing home the Pig, we lost the Jug. We lost the Axe about a month later.

The Gophers will need a bigger trophy case at the State Fair next year.

Nice piece. Meanwhile Souhan is writing about the Twins. Has he admitted he was wrong yet?

Pretty sure he wrote an article saying he was wrong right after the Michigan game but I could be mistaken
