There are three candidates in the Big Ten West. I have been on Minnesota’s bandwagon since the summer. And, I’m staying on it. I think the Golden Gophers can win the Big Ten West—as long as Mitch Leidner throws well. I also like Illinois. If the Fighting Illini come back from North Carolina with a win, Illinois could be a real factor in the West. A big reason why: Wes Lunt, who is the most talented quarterback in the division. And this team seems to be galvanized by the tumultuous start to the season, when Tim Beckman was fired a week before the opener. And then there is Northwestern, the most surprising 2-0 team in the Big Ten. You can win a lot of games with a good defense and running game. And those are two of NU’s top strengths. I see no sleepers in the East.

I know, Leidner never will be confused with John Elway. And his 1-of-7 start at Colorado State was brutal. But, he did deliver the big TD pass to KJ Maye late in the game and finished 23-of-45 for 233 yards with two TDs vs. the Rams. I know true freshman Demry Croft is “sexy” and probably more talented. But can Minnesota really reach its potential with him under center?
