my guess is that many of you, and some of the national tv/print talking heads, were saying the same thing about tubby smith back in the late winter/early spring of 2007 if this same question/scenario would have come up at that time. virtually everyone of you self-appointed message board "experts" would have been saying that smith is coming from kentucky....a blue blood program.......he won a national championship.......he can pretty much get any open job he wants right now......why would minnesota ever get him.........pashaw........the gophers........pffff?

but you "experts" keep on keeping on.

carry on. thanks.

Well, so far they've been right.
And if Anthony Grant is named coach, they will have been right again because most think he would come here and no one would be impressed.

what? who has been right? ha! not one of these people claiming to have inside knowledge, and trust me they don't have any inside knowledge of squat, knows who teague and ellis are targeting. for you, or any of them, to say they were targeting smart is nothing more than media speculation and conjecture. trust me that no one outside of teague/ellis and their close associates know who they are targeting.

to try and take credit for smart renegotiating his contract with VCU and then somehow turn around and say "they are right/i'm right" about smart and a purely speculative minnesota offer is pretty laughable to say the least. you have absolutely NO IDEA if smart was ever even offered the actual position.

come on man. at least stay with known facts here and don't rely strictly on speculation and hear-say to claim you/they are right or correct in your points of view. just saying.

I have a hard time comparing Tubby in 2007 to the hot coaching names now (Shaka and Brad Stevens, for example) and question his ability in 2007 to get any job he wanted.

Case in point, no one would write this article about Brad Stevens in 2013.

That's not saying we can't attract a good name to come here, but saying hiring Tubby in 2007 is akin to getting any name on the market now is not apt, IMO.

Good point. Truthfully, I can't even remember who the "candidates" were when we hired Tubby. All I know is that I was shocked. here is hoping that I am as shocked, in a good way, as I was last time. Anthony Grant won't do it for me. For me, it is about culture and geography. Call me biased, but I just think the B1G is diffferent than the SEC, and he may find it a little more difficult to get recruits into Minnesota than Alabama. It would be nice to get a guy with a recruiting base that focuses on guys that can be admitted to a B1G institution.

Never say never...Extremely unlikely yes! as in lightening striking the same spot twice

Tim Miles, anyone? Not gonna' happen, but he would have been the "fit" Teague was looking for.

I would agree with this. Although Ben Howland has been fired, he would be a good comparison to Tubby in 2007 -- a coach with a great track record coaching a team whose fans are glad to see him go.

Tubby knew he was about to be fired so he wanted to jump ship before that happened, thus he had to take a job that was immediately open, that was us. And why are we using Tubby as a shining example of who we can get? We got him because his star was fading, which isn't the case at all with Shaka, Stevens, and Buzz.

I wish we would have been proactive and grabbed him before he went to Nebraska. I'd love it. But like you said, not gonna happen. Can't see him leaving Nebraska after one yr. But is a helluva coach.

Damn good article in hinsight (not on the authors part)

...and a perfect fit for the midwest. He knows what types of players around here can play at this level and what you need to go outside the state for. If we had hired him six years ago or been proactive, as you say, he would be a long, long term solution.

For one the "they've" you speak of probably have know idea who has or who hasn't been approached.

It is the "Shaka Mania". People threw all their eggs in on basket and it didn't happen now it proves those "they" people are correct regardless of how real the Shaka Smart discussion ever was.
