Coach Kill was just on KFAN and stated that Maturi spoke to him for the first time on Saturday. If this is true Maturi looks even worse.

I don't think it makes Maturi look worse. It just means that Kill had to be well down the list of people he was in contact with since the beginning of the search. He was going after a bigger name - none of them wanted to come here, either because of the $ or because of the job situation we present.

Must have been through his agent largely...I just went back and listened to the audio I got from Director of Athletic Communications Gary Bowman, and confirmed he did say he knew "earlier in the week".

Kill and Maturi have both stated today that Kill was not the first choice.

Kill also said he has never looked for a job. Every job has been offered or presented to him.

"Kill also said he has never looked for a job. Every job has been offered or presented to him."

That right there says a lot about how widely respected he is.

Might that have something to do with the fact that N. Illinois still had a game to play. There may have been talks going on already, just not directly.

Link to the audio coming briefly. Brief clip regarding social media delay & the timeline itself.

Edit: just kidding, I have no earthly idea how to upload audio to a hosting site.

Why doe it make him look worse?

Because after a 7 week exhaustive search we don't reach the guy we are going to hire until 2 days ago and then we offer him the job that day after doing the first interview?

To me this sounds like we were getting desperate and thought we better quick offer someone.

The other interesting tidbit came from a caller to KFAN who knows about the Chryst recruitment. Apparantly Chryst was high on the list but we had a huge concern about how long he might end up staying here.

This should have little weight - if a coach is leaving for another job it probably means they were successful in getting us going in the right direction wouldn't it? Besides, just put in a decent buyout if you are worried and we get some cash to spend on all the previous coaches we are paying off.

Chryst has not been a head coach which was one of the stated criteria from the get go. In my opinion, Jerry Kill is a much better hire than Chryst. KFAN is always negative about the Gophers because they are the Vikings station --- a competitor. Burrito and his Bobo (JG) always mock the Gophers football program and call the fans idiots. I can't stand them always whining about everything in life in general. Maybe you like it --- I don't.All they do is pi$$ and moan.

I don't doubt that that is exactly what happened. My guess is we went after Hoke, Golden, Mullen, etc. They all said no, Maturi panicked and moved on Kill quickly. I don't doubt he might have like to hire his Badger Buddy, but if you think the PR bleep-storm was bad for Kill, it would have been much worse with Chryst. Getting someone with no HC experience after declaring it vitally important and adding charges of nepotism and Badger-ism to it would have made it 10x worse.

Was hoping there was some way I could get it to stream, but if you want, here's the MP3 of the brief chat w/ Gary Bowman.

Sounds (at least to me) like they were probably talking to his agent if they knew early in the week. Probably kept Kill in the dark (or pretended to, plausible deniability against charges he was "checked out" of the MAC Championship game) until Saturday. Who knows, all speculation.

I guess I see that angle. But I still think it makes Maturi look desperate and his proclamations in October more absurd. The sooner we have a new AD to go with the Prez and Coach the better.

Go Gophers!
