Time to make a call to Bryce Drew!

*Community notes* Last time Bryce Drew was in a power conference, he lost 20 straight games to end his tenure at Vanderbilt. If we were to retread, I'd much rather the U go after the likes of Chris Mack, Will Wade, Archie Miller and so on.

That is concerning about Drew, but it was at Vanderbilt, the hardest basketball job in the SEC. Drew was the last person to make the NCAA tournament there in his first year.

His final year they lost Darius Garland in November, who was their highest recruit ever. That really changed the season. He's turned out to be pretty good.

I would love Will Wade but no chance the Gophers hire him. Hard pass on Mack and Miller.

Mack or Wade would be high on the list. As would Mick Cronin's #1 assistant.

I was hoping to see Coyle has seen enough and pulled the trigger on Ben today - last night was the last straw

Isn’t anyone on Ben’s staff qualified for the job? Sometimes an assistant or 2 is considered a possible HC candidate. Is everything on the roster trash?
No college head coaching experience on the staff so it would be similar to hiring Johnson in that you would be taking a risk on a first time college head coach. Don't see that happening with back to back hires.

Big part of why many of us feel there is little to gain by firing Johnson in season. If you had an assistant you wanted to evaluate it would make some sense, but their isn't a viable permanent replacement on the current staff.

Hes certainly an interesting case. Absolutely dominated lower leagues, recruited very high end talent at Vandy, but also ultimately had 2 tough years at Vandy. I'd be inclined to give him a shot for sure, but it's certainly possible he's just not made for coaching on the biggest of stages.

Vandy certainly the hardest football job, but I wouldn't say that's the case in hoops. They're off to a good start this year and I would say their recent failures are more because of making a bad hires like Jerry Stackhouse. This is a program that's had success in the SEC, they picked off the Coach Cal natty winner in the SEC tourney in 2012. Certainly isn't an easy job but people have won there more recently then anyone who has won here. With that said Drew made a couple NCAA tourneys at Vandy before the wheels fell off, definitely someone worth monitoring.

The Gophers have made the tournament more recently than Vandy, and Drew only made it once, his first year. They have the toughest academic standards in the SEC.

They do but Duke has the toughest admission standards in the ACC, doesn't appear to hold them back. Again yes the gophers have made a grand total of one tournament appearance since Vandy pissed it down their leg against Northwestern in 2017. Which again is more due to making a bad hires in Jerry Stackhouse and one could argue Bryce Drew was a bad hire as well. Vandy isn't that far removed from winning an SEC title, they've won both a regul season and conference tournament title and gone to the sweet 16 in the last 20 years, they're not Northwestern. Vandy's program history would compare favorably to most of their SEC counterparts. At the day when you say toughest standards it's the SEC they have standards, the rest of the league has "standards". Vandy probably closer to SMU or Miami then it is Stanford or Northwestern in terms of academic prestige.

drew went from the toughest academic standards to one of the lowest academic standards in d1 at gcu. they take anyone with a ged.
